I restored my jailbroken Kindle with disabled updates
Hello! I have such a problem: I jailbroke my Kindle Paperwhite 10 (2018), installed hotfix and after that disabled updates with extensions in KUALA. Unfortunately, in settings instead of reboot i used restore option. Firmware: 5.12.4. Can I restore jailbreak without updates?

Did you try reinstall the latest version of hotfix via "Update Your Kindle" option?
Do a couple of extra reboot before attempting that install. |

I can't reinstall fix, because this button "Update Yout Kindle" is not active. I disabled updates with KUAL. And After that i restored Kindle.

Keep wi-fi off.
Do two simple reboots. Put Hotfix bin file in USB storage. Reboot another time - hotfix should install. Reinstall all packages you had (KUAL, etc) If this doesn’t work, do WatchThis JB again (make sure you stay on your 5.12.4!) |

For future: go to Parental settings and disabled a feature (for example, Goodreads). It will ask you to set a password.
This will also gray out factory restory and some other things. |

Thanks a lot! I made that you suggested and everything works good. Do I need to install hotfix after I restored everything?

Thanks a lot! I made that you suggested and now everything works great. Is it necessary to reinstal hotfix from "Update Yout Kindle" now? or it has already installed when I pasted it into the root of Kindle and rebooted?

That’s weird
If everything worked, that means JB survived. However, you say there is still that bin file - if it has been installed, the file should have been gone. In that case yes, install hotfix again, but this time use mrpi |

I'm sorry that I ask a lot of questions, but I have two last questions:
1) I used Rename OTA Binaries to disable updates in KUAL. Now when I restored KUAL in this program I choose restore (to enable updates), but it doesn't work. This program renamed otaupd and otav3 into otaupd.bck and otav3.bck in usr/bin. I also tried to rename them manually in the midnight commander, but not successfully. How can I enable updates? 2) And how to install hotfix using mrpi without option "Update Yout Kindle"? Last edited by Yaroslav; 11-15-2024 at 01:33 PM. |

To do it manually, you need to do “mntroot rw” command first (no quotes).
If that succeeds, then you can rename files. If it doesn’t, that means JB doesn’t quite work anymore. Did you use mrpi before? Put bin packages to mrpackages folder, unplug Kindle, then search for “;log mrpi” without quotes from Kindle’s search bar. Or run it from KUAL |

Why do you want updates back?
Once Kindle updates, you will need to restore JB and reinstall everything again. |

And if you update to current FW, you will loose your JB (5.17.x), because hotfix won’t work anymore (the one with two reboots)

I am very grateful to you for your answers mergen3107.
When I installed hotfix through mrpi extension Rename Ota Binaries started to work. You asked me why I want to enable updates: this actually makes me feel a little uncomfortable, when I don't know much about device and disabled the last "chance" to install hotfix. (I didn't expect that I can install it through mrpi ). I think it is better to enable airplane mode and do not turn on wi-fi instead of using exstensions such as I used without experience. Thank you! |

No, it is actually preferable to have OTA blocked!
Just remember these: 1) JB with properly installed hotfix can survive only ONE factory reset or firmware update. 2) If you do one of these above, just make sure to simply reboot twice and reinstall hotfix. 3) If you do any two above actions in a row without restoring JB, you will lose JB for good. 4) Do NOT go to 5.17.x firmware at all! JB won't survive (at least in its current state). |
