That is odd. I clicked the link again and definitely was in the AU store and the books do show.

The books do show in the AU store. When ownedbycats switched to the CA store, the books did not show. You have to search for a books (I did To Ride Pegasus ) and then the books will be visible. One oddity is the series shows in AU as The Talent while in the CA store it show as The Talents Saga.

One other item to note is the AU store shows Transworld as the publisher while the CA store shows Random House Publishing as the publishers. On price, $12.99 AU$ compared to $2.99 CA$ makes the purchase from Canada quite a bit more attractive.

And it looks like all the books are now back again. Strange ... but good to see it wasn't permanent.

The problem sometimes is that when an author dies, the estate get to decide what to do with said author's works. Which is probably why the eBook has been pulled form sale.

I remember the Belgariad series (David Eddings) issue. They were available in the US and UK. But they were pulled from the US. Eventually, they can back to the US. This is most likely another estate issue.
The part I found especially odd is that the audiobook of Farmer of the Sky is available.

It is all about rights CONTRACTS.
Audiobooks (as we know them) did not exist in 1950. That contract came later and I suspect had a longer rights time set due to the effort to produce that product.

Audiobooks pre-date ebooks.
They certainly existed in 1950, but few contracts would have included them. Mostly produced for blind people.
78s (Since late 1900s, abridged, usually 12" rather than 10". 33 rpm 12" & 14" existed from 1932 for cinema but I don't know if used for talking books) LPs (1948 for microgroove: 33rpm, 16 rpm later 1950s), special format tape cartridges for blind, cassettes (maybe since 1962), CDs (1982). Only started to be marketed to regular sighted people from 1980s. MP3s invented about 1991/1992, public 1995, Winamp 1997. Portable players later.
Audible's portable player ONLY for audio books (too poor for music) was early 1998. True portable players for MP3 / AAC etc started mid 1998 for Flash and HDD. By 1999 iRiver, Rio and Creative had players. Sony 1999, but they had portable CD in 1984 and minidisk in 1992. Audio books were on CD, but not on MiniDisk, though it did have pressed commercial music (dual format player). Creative had a 6 GB player over a year before Apple's 5GB first iPod released Oct 2001 in USA.
At that time Cassette and CD were still the only format used by the main publishers. MP3 based "talking books" were first widely available in libraries as dedicated physical players that could be borrowed.

Eventually Amazon bought Audible and now streaming/Audible is the main source of audio books and marketing now aimed at everyone rather than the blind.

The cassette is still the best format for totally blind as it's much fewer cassettes than CDs, the tape remembers the place and the player can be easily operated by feel. Audio on a phone or Kindle is appalling for a blind person.

How many blind people do you know? My uncle is totally blind, and has been since birth. He listens to audiobooks and uses text to speech on other books on his phone all the time. He doesn't use a regular e-ink Kindle now, but he has in the past used my aunt's K3 to listen to books using text to speech.

Three. One is now dead.
Yes, blind people can use modern touch screen phones. Ergonomics is terrible compared to keyboard models. I tested the DXG and the KK3. Far superior to a Paperwhite 3 (needs USB) or Paperwhite 4 (BT), because the older ones had buttons.

I'm not against it, but having used BETTER implemented technologies, it's poor.

Anyway, my main point is that talking books / audio books were once rare and solely for the blind. Now because they are aimed at commuters, joggers, gyms etc far more titles are available. But the ergonomics are terrible.

The point is they are not new and predate ebooks.

Given that the ebook editions remain available elsewhere, maybe this is some temporary glitch with Kobo and they might return ... time will tell I guess.
Ebooks.com has its own proprietary DRM. Any idea what that might be and whether it is included in our friendly Calibre plugin?

eBooks.com uses Adobe adept DRM as they sell ePub. It's nothing proprietary as the DRM is part of ADE.

Upon further research the proprietary DRM applies to their app only.

Apparently in Canada ebooks.com is calling it the Talents Saga, not series. Otherwise it seems to be the same, except for pricing. https://www.ebooks.com/en-ca/series/the-talents-saga/

A bit relevant: a few years back I grabbed one of the Baen freebies, but now the only sign I can find of it on the site is this.

Since Baen uses a consistent url scheme, I was able to dig up the original page on the Wayback Machine. It seems to have disappeared sometime in 2020.

Considering that the other example, the Heinlein novel, was simply marked as "not available" and the page left up, I find this curious.

When I checked on Sarah A. Hoyt's website, at this time, I see Draw One in the Dark listed as being reissued by Goldport Press. When I look on Amazon, I find Draw One in the Dark showing as being available in Kindle Unlimited so Amazon is the only permitted vendor. I have some vague memories of a discussion about issues between her and Baen but not sure when or where I saw that.
