KOReader Built-In Updater Fails
Has anyone figured out why KOReader fails to update on a Kindle Scribe 2024?
When I try to update using the built-in updater, it says, "Failed to update KOReader" and gives options to Cancel, Retry, or Abort. |

Hello everyone! I installed winter break and followed the tutorial, everything worked, thanks for that!
I wonder though: Is it bad if I accidentally access the “Install hotfix” book again? The tutorial says that you have to use it after every update anyway. At the moment I see no reason for an update, there isn't one yet anyway. Hence the question whether I should uninstall this “book” Hotfix? Or is it not a bad thing if you come across it? |

Excuse me, I don't understand what you want to say? I mean the hotfix which shows up as a book. What happens when I accidentally hit it in the future? Should I uninstall the fix after using it?

No, keep it in your library.
1) No harm if you hit it again 2) IF you get and update, make sure to run it again to restore JB. Then you would need to reinstall packages via ;log mrpi 3) IF you don’t run it after update, and you have teo updates in a row, or two factory resets in a row, or any combination of the two - you will lose JB for good. Depending on the JB situation at that future moment, you might or might not be able to do JB from scratch. So, keep it just in case. |

I tried this procedure: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/
with my Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) [Serial G001 PX11; FW 5.14.0. Everything went fine, I have a "Run Hoftix" on my kindle, but when I tried to start KUAL with ";log mrpi", it says on the bottom "Hush hush..", then for a short moment a 'box' logo appears, but closes immediatly. I cannot find any KUAL book in my libary. I guess after connection there was an update as I am now on FW 5.14.3.2 I ran the Hotfix serveral times, and repeated the post jailbreak process several times (https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/post-jailbreak/) Don't now where to go from here... Are you sure about that FW number? The latest firmware for the PW5 (the 11th gen) is 5.17.1.0.3. That's a fairly big difference.
Have you already tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions below each of the steps on the kindlemodding page? |

I took the firmware number from what is displayed on my settings page.
My kindle never went online for the last couple of years as I am fed up with Amazon stealing features with their 'updates' so I made sure that they do not touch my device as far as I can. Strange thing is that everything went fine including the last step here: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...ing-kual-mrpi/ I get the big Amazon logo with "everything done" etc. But there is no trace of KUAL to be found. There is this box logo opening and directly closing when I use ";log mrpi". I also tried those troubleshooting hints, I also tried both KUAL versions, I disabled OTA updates as shown. Won't work. Maybe Amazon did sth with my device when I went online... |

Interesting.
The PW5 that I jailbroke had only been offline for a few months and was on 5.16.something. After I applied the hotfix but before I could do the ota renaming step, it updated itself to 5.17.1.0.3. If you're up for it I'd probably just try factory resetting the kindle and starting from the beginning. And if that didn't work I'd reset, manually update to 5.17.1.0.3, and then try... Maybe also re-download all the jailbreak files in case something didn't download properly. Actually, I'll just post the sha256sums: 353c2f5059b48aa27466ac5591b862b50ea44bf7350d23e49e b20aafea65f84d step1-WinterBreak.tar.gz eebf8fed8cb2dd0e3249176c8444e4d78e408d998235fd056c e913159f610ab9 step2-Update_hotfix_universal.bin fd2ba33ed0d8fb69b32802e302f222e56edd65124f494bce32 aa1a92a1398584 step3-kual-mrinstaller-khf.tar.xz 269b1db205281c0181bd1560a0270612a86bb42b12a05db985 4c15d0040f2994 step4-Update_KUALBooklet_ALLDEVICES_KS2_install.bin Not sure why the forum software is adding spaces in the sha sums - ignore them. Also I doubt it matters but check that your system time is correct. And that airplane mode is on when it should be and off when it should be. It's such a needless pain, isn't it ![]() |

I suspect since it's necessary to be online in order to use WinterBreak that your Kindle automatically starts which is why the jailbreak process is being strange. You could probably just make sure it's updated (since the latest update still jailbreaks fine) and then start the process from the beginning?
