Kindle Scribe - Writing in ebook/pdf with pen without sending to kindle?

Hello,

I have created documents as ebooks and PDFs. I would like to write in these documents with the pen. However, I cannot send these documents to Amazon because they are confidential documents. Is there software that does the exact conversion that Amazon does so that I can write in it with the pen?

Greetings
Richard

What I have found is that they have to be created in PDOC format so that it says "Document" next to the thumbnail in the Kindle. If you sideload them (with Calibre) in this format it will work.

You need to convert your PDF to the KFX format. This can be done using Calibre with the KFX Output plugin.

There was a recent discussion on the Colorsoft thread about this, it was more focused on enabling colors on sideloaded documents, but that is in fact a similar and related issue. You can check posts 164, 170 and 177 of the thread for more info.

I have a slightly related question - once you write on the side-loaded book you cannot export the book with the notes, correct? You could only view the handwritten notes on the Scribe.

You can convert the notes to a fixed layout ePub file (but not 'with' the book), using KFX input plugin CLI:

See the section on Converting Scribe notebooks. Handwritten strokes are converted to SVG objects (one per page).

I think it should be possible to convert SVGs to 'page' images and then place those into the original PDF with PDF editor (this is kinda what Amazon does for you if you are using their services). But nobody has written a script to do this.
