A different workflow, but one I like, is to save your docx as a pdf then annotate it on the tablet using a free pdf editor and a pen. Then you can use the annotated pdf as the basis for editing the docx when you get back to HQ.

Ghastly!

If you are using a tablet that supports a pen, and insist on PDF instead of epub, at least spend the money once and get Nebo. The handwriting is converted to text on a separate exportable layer.

But I've done thousands for over 10 years and typing short text comments to a big highlight of the epub is far easier and faster and works on any size eink.

The only tablets I use now are Nxtpaper 11 and Nxtpaper 14 (10.9" and 14.25") and I'd only annotate a PDF if I didn't have a docx!

If you want to go the docx -> epub route, the doc2epub tool from Google Code works pretty well. The output is epub2 and will need a little fixup that is easily done with Sigil.

Attached Files
File Type: docx sample3.docx (33.6 KB, 7 views)
File Type: epub sample3.epub (50.6 KB, 7 views)

Rubbish compared to using Calibre.
Of course the docx (or original odt with extra save as in docx) needs to properly use Styles, which 1:1 map to CSS.

It's simple, does a reasonable job and will suffice for some. The OP may find it useful even if you don't. It's just another tool. In my experience Calibre mangles well formatted, feature rich epub3s into an horrific epub2 subset. I don't use it in general as there are better tools out there for my work, such as Sigil.

Suum cuique.

Conversion epub3 to epub2 is completely unrelated to making an epub from docx. Certainly Sigil is a help for epub3-epub2.
"Feature rich" epub3 need manually edited to be anything else.
