Calibre won't detect my device

Hello,
I am new here, and I received a new Kindle for Xmas which Calibre won't detect. I had no problems when I used my older Kindle. I followed the instructions on the pinned post and it didn't resolve the problem. Can anybody help? Thank you in advance!

Here's the info from the debug device thing:

According to your log your copy of calibre (v2.40) is ancient. If your Kindle model was released later than that old version of calibre you'll get results like above.

The first thing you should do is update to the latest version of calibre (v3.14) to see whether that fixes it.

Why is it that so many people are using such an old version of Calibre and then wonder why it something doesn't work?

Hmmm... I think OSX traces it's ancestry back to BSD. At one point, I downloaded Darwin to play with (no GUI, etc.) but fun to look at.

Up to now, there were no problems? If it works, don't fix it? Any other adages that you want to throw in.

Dunno - I guess for the same reason as they don't read the sticky threads at the top of the sub forums:

Yeah, NEXTStep was based around a more heavyweight version of the Mach microkernel (from Carnegie Mellon University) with a healthy proportion of BSD code surrounding it.

Hmm I thought I'd updated my Calibre version, but I will recheck. I have an ancient MacBook (2007) so it's possible I can't update anymore. To clarify, this version of Calibre worked great with my old Kindle. Thank you for the replies.

Just FYI ... calibre v2.40 was released on October 2nd 2015. It will only ever be able to identify Kindle (or any other brand) models which existed at that time. Presumably your old Kindle model was released prior to this date. Old versions of calibre are never retrofitted to be able to recognise later devices.

What I do is keep some of the older installers and update whenever there is a new version. If something is wrong with the new version, I can easily go back. This means I get to avail myself of new features and bug fixes.

Or simply download it when ever you need from here (e.g.for OS-X) and read up changes in "whats new":

If the version for OSX shown in your spoiler is correct (10.7.5), you are not going to be able to update though I am a bit confused since the calibre download page says versions of OSX lower than 10.8 are limited to 1.48 as the highest version and you are currently on 2.40.

One of those cases, where what do I have to lose is the question.
