En beretning om dr. Samuel Fergusson, dennes tjener Joe og jægeren Dick Kennedys farefulde færd i ballon fra Zanzibar på Afrikas østkyst via Victoriasøen, Nilens kilder, Tchadsøen og Timbuktu til Guina-vandfaldene i det nuværende Mali. Undervejs overlever de bl.a. angreb af vilde dyr og lige så vilde og blodtørstige negerstammer, vulkanudbrud, sult og tørst.

Fem uger i ballon var forfatterens gennembrud og første store succes.
