The shelves are checked each time the device is connected. As long as the configuration is correct, it should happen.
Isn't that only if metadata management is set to Auto? Preferences | Sending Books to Devices | Metadata Management?

Yes. I did say "As long as the configuration is correct". I suppose I should have explicitly stated that. But, as you mentioned metadata management earlier in the thread, I was being lazy.
