The documentation says you are correct
I have no KFX, as I have a K4NT. 99% of my purchases have been AZW download and transfer by USB.
My willingness to purchase their books, ended a few days ago.

You should see the amount of Youtubes on how to transfer to Calibre and rants (Louis Rossman. right to repair proponent, but not for tender ears)

I think that only checks ePubs.

EDIT: I missed a page.

Thanks - seems like the DRM check is for epubs only. It didn't detect the DRM in a test AZW3 file I tried (it worked for an epub but I only have a tiny number of DRM'd epub books).

But - I should have tried this before - the Linux "file" command does it for azw3:

> file book.azw3
> book.azw3: Mobipocket E-book "Book Title", 1220485 bytes uncompressed, version 8, codepage 65001, encrypted (type 2)

... so I can easily run this for everything on my computer. Hopefully it works for old .mobi files as well.

Thanks again

OK, the good news is that I have successful added my first book from the Paperwhite and converted it to epub, so the DeDRM seems to be working ... assuming this book has it. Some residual odd bits.

When I first go to the device, new books have mostly unknown authors and many of the titles contain mobi-asin. This means that when I am done with the processing, I have to go to the device again and do the match with the library. Ugh.

This process is ending me up with a black and white cover. There is a full color low resolution cover from Open Library, but ugh. Is there a way to end up with full color, full resolution on the epub especially?

What is the status of Calibre paying attention to Kindle Collections? Years and years ago I remember them being supported and then support going away. One of the current anomalies is that at some point I added a Short Stories collection on the Paperwhite, but on Amazon Digital Content there is a collection with no name. Not a Calibre issue, of course, but support could be useful.

Calibre doesn't support collections on modern Kindles.

Today I borrowed a library book and attempted to get it in Kindle format. When the library linked me to Amazon, I found this message:

Quote:
Sorry, this book is not currently available. Please return to your library to see if you can check out the book in a different format.
So, no download, no checkout.

OK, that is far from critical and I understand that the blank collection on Amazon is an Amazon thing, not a Calibre thing.

But, what about the mangled titles and unknown authors? Seem daft. Wasn't always true, I'm sure, but has been true for some time.

How about the black & white covers?

I'm not sure what mangled titles and unknown authors you are seeing? Or how you imported? I did 1463 books as a test and mine came in as standard titles and authors. I mean, amazon usually adds the series name in with the title as in: title (series). But otherwise mine are all good (no metadata editing done so far).

As for the b&w covers...that is normal. When Amazon sends a book to an eink kindle that only does b/w, they "optimize" the book for the device. Which means they change anything with color, whether it is the cover or illustrations inside, to b/w.

This is different from how things were with azw3 which always got color no matter the device.

Did you enter the serial number of your Kindle in the plugin settings?

You have to add the ebook AFTER adding the plugins

Yes, I did (and rechecked it)

I thought this is what I had done. So I guess that what I should do now is:-

1. Delete the book from Calibre
2. Restart Calibre
3. Re-add the book
4. Attempt another conversion

You have deDRM version 10.0.3, according to the log. You need 10.0.9 or the alpha.
