This is caused by incompatibilities between Qt WebEngine (used by the viewer and editor) and the graphics drivers
on your system. Try updating the graphics drivers, if that does not work, you can try disabling hardware acceleration by setting the environment variable QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--disable-gpu" |

Kovid, I don't know if I'm having the same problem. I've been downloading the latest v7 Calibre and the installer keeps giving me the error message that it's not a valid installation package. Have tried five times. Thanks for any tips you can give. Am using my same old Windows 11 system, fully updated.

Kovid, I've just tried to uninstall my Calibre and have found that my Windows 11 system won't let me do that either! Says my installer is not valid. 12 years using Calbre and never encountered a problem like this one. Have rebooted my PC 5 times, of course.

"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

Thanks very much, Kovid. I've got my Calibre running again using the portable version. Whew!

Update to 7.17 Viewer Not Responding
I couldn't get this working on my Linux box with the additional environment variable:
Code:
export QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--disable-gpu" && /usr/bin/calibre-debug -w Failed to import PyQt module: PyQt6.QtWebEngineCore with error: /opt/calibre/lib/libQt6WebEngineCore.so.6: undefined symbol: FT_Get_Color_Glyph_Paint Traceback (most recent call last): So far I've been using a different stand-alone viewer as a work-around. Is there anything else I can modify to get this working from within Calibre? Thanks! Dan |

Update your OS, the version of FreeType on your system is too old for Qt WebEngine.

Viewer not responding
Quote:
I've had the same issue, but it started before 7.17 (1-2 weeks ago). When I try to view a book, an empty window pops up for the table of contents and for the book. When I finally give up and close them, I then get the message "calibre-parallel.exe is not responding." My graphics drivers were already up-to-date, and I've added QTWEBENGINE_CHROMIUM_FLAGS to my user environment variables (with and without the surrounding quotation marks). I had already tried a repair install of Calibre. Same results after each try. I'm running fully-updated Windows 11 Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics adapter. Any other suggestions? Thanks, RWC |

You can try rebooting in safe mode and see if they work. If they do it tells you something on your computer is interfering with calibre.

I did not change anything or uninstall software. I literally just opened Calibre in safe mode, viewed a few books, and returned to normal mode. Another data point: I could view books in my admin account all along, even while viewing was broken in the non-admin account I normally use. Thanks for your help! RWC |
