Covers for books made in Calibre sent to Amazon Cloud

I've noticed that when I make books in Calibre and send them to my Amazon cloud they always end up in Personal Docs and most of the time the cover's don't show up (unless I go to the cover once I've opened the book). Is there a setting in Calibre that can correct either one of those facts, or is it a quirk of the Amazon cloud?

That does not work with the Personal Documents service. Amazon post-processes the book to apply the Personal tag, and add an ASIN. Books with an ASIN must receive covers from Amazon's servers or have calibre sideload covers, since the Kindle software will not extract them.

Amazon does not process Dual MOBI for covers when sent through the Personal Documents service. Dual MOBIs will never get those covers. Old MOBIs will receive covers like any other book that comes from Amazon's servers.

Moral of the story: use calibre with your Kindle directly.

Really? If you send a file already marked as a personal document via the cloud service, the cover does not appear on the Kindle?

IIRC only files marked as books (as opposed to personal documents) suffer from this problem.

The cover problem is for Dual MOBI only. I could test-mail a Dual MOBI pdoc, maybe tomorrow.

I believe the problem is because Dual MOBI isn't officially supported, and the PDOC service doesn't extract some metadata from the KF8 portion. Apparently that is where the cover is kept? At least, the cover linked with the KF8 portion?

Thanks for the link Kovid & for the information as well eschwartz. I tried several different ways through Calibre to make the file so that the cover showed. Nothing worked.

It should work if you send it as Old MOBI.

Thanks for the tip about using "Old Mobi" format. That seems to have worked. I tried it on a fanfiction I'd just downloaded and a conversion of Edmund Hamilton's "City at World's End" which we have here at MR in epub format and both showed up with covers.
