Kobo & The Literati
This looks interesting:
Just last week, Kobo expanded its service on yet another device – the Literati, a wireless electronic reader by The Sharper Image. Powering the complete eReading experience on the Literati, Literati customers can shop the onboard Kobo store and enjoy the great book-like reading escape book lovers expect from Kobo. The new Literati features a 7-inch FULL COLOR LCD screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, a pleasing design, simplified interface and durability. Starting in October, you can buy the device for $159 or less from over 7,000 retail locations in the US. That’s the broadest retail footprint of any eReader currently available! Just about anywhere you shop – Macy’s, Kohl’s, Best Buy, J.C. Penney’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, and more. Key features available on the Literati, powered by Kobo: - Direct access from the eReader to nearly 2 million titles – thousands of which are free – including New York TimesÒ bestsellers, new releases, cookbooks and more. - 25 free books already pre-loaded on the device, and convenient download access to an additional 125 of the most popular free classics. That’s 150 free eBooks right out of the box! - A customizable bookshelf and reading experience. Select fonts, sizes and colors that best suit your reading preferences. - The ability to sync with your Kobo account on any device – whether it’s your iPhone, iPad, Kobo eReader, tablet, BlackBerry, and many more. Kobo will even save your bookmarks so you can pick up where you left off on any device. The Literati was designed and is distributed by MerchSource, under trademark license from The Sharper Image. It's extremely interesting. I do hope a Canadian retailer picks it up at some reasonable price. It will certainly be in line in Toronto.

This looks very interesting! I might be tempted unless the Nook drops down to $100 for Christmas. *crosses fingers*

Does anyone know what the operating system is, and can it be used as a tablet? Many others have taken the PDN, and augen gentouch 78 and made them multifunction devices.

It will be online through overstock.com which ships free to Canada for purchases over $150 CAD. I am not sure that everything on the site is available to us, but it seems like it would be worth looking at if the LCD and no touch works for you in a reader.

Thanks. I hadn't been to overstock in more than a year because at the time it seemed too restrictive for Canadian purchases. But what I am really looking for is Canadian distribution. If the b&w Kobo drops to around $99, a colour model at $159 makes a nice upsell. But there is a wireless (wifi?) Kobo coming soon and the price range of that will be a factor, too.

Oh, do tell, Sensual Poet. A WiFi Kobo reader? Maybe it will have support for some of the things found in other e-ink devices, but not our little first born device.

That sounds intriguing. Still exploring all my ebook options before I break down and buy something. *pats iTouch* LOL

CNet has a review of this unit here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-18438_7-20016673-82.html
It is still expected to be in stores in October. It will have wifi, colour, and broad distribution including Best Buy and Macy's -- for list $159. It's not the best thing since sliced bread ... but it is a colour ereader at a much lower price than an Android tablet or iPad. Since almost all ebooks are currently b&w, and it's too small for comics, it's appeal a year from now is probably limited. Still, each new device that brings a different user experience helps broaden the market. And it certainly helps Kobo stay visible. An earlier press release stated 7,000 US retail locations for this device. |
