Your computer has the Calibre Library. Calibre currently only allows 1 computer to maintain the Library.

Someone else in your family has a book to add.

Previously, they had to bug you to add it so the content server could supply it to others.

NOW you can have Calibre monitor a folder, so you can set up a shared 'Book Drop' folder and anyone in the share group can make a deposit and have it appear in the Library.
Fair point - I had not considered that scenario, as I do not operate a share group.

it is not totally clear from this thread though, how / when calibre checks that folder. is it on calibre start up, or on a timer, or both. Is timer configurable

Kovid said that it is checked at startup, and also while running.

As to whether a timer is used or not I have no idea. Calibre may just have registered with the OS to be told when the folder contents change as that would obviate the need for a timer.

In another thread Kovid mentioned that's how it works; Calibre gets change notifications, no polling or timer involved.
