Kindlers Boycott $10+ ebooks
Galley Cat reports that nearly 250 Kindlers have joined an informal boycott of Kindle ebooks costing more than $9.99. They even have a boycott tag.
Granted that 250 Kindlers isn't a large number -- yet! -- but if it spreads this could bode badly for Amazon unless it can coerce publishers into lowering the price. It will be interesting to see what happens. Are there any MR Kindlers who are members of the boycott or who have insider knowledge of its success/failure? |

So these people would buy a book if it costs $9.99, but "boycott" it if is costs a penny more? Don't you think that's slightly ridiculous?

I totally agree with them no ebook should cost more than $10, there's even some situations where the ebook costs more than the paper version which is quite frankly wrong. |

It depends on the ebook. A fully illustrated commented critical edition of the complete works of some important author may well deserve a price above that number, especially if it has been carefully formatted and proof-read, don't you think so?

"Whether you prefer biographies, classics, investment guides, thrillers, or sci-fi, thousands of your favorite books are available, including 103 of 111 books currently found on the New York Times® Best Seller list. New York Times Best Sellers and most new releases are $9.99, and you'll find many books for less." These people seem to think that if Amazon charges more for new books, they are being cheated somehow. Its an old, old topic, there is a thread here on it, and a long running one one the Amazon Kindle page. They've gotten stuck, somehow, on the mistaken notion that Amazon said no book would be over $9.99. |

But seriously. I don't think there is a need to "call for" a boycott. If you think a book cost too much, don't buy it. Do you have to tell people that? That what I do with pretty much everything I purchase. BOb |

Don't people realize that amazon takes a loss on the 9.99 bestsellers? They shouldn't be boycotting Amazon at all, they should be boycotting the publishers.

A large boycott could effect the publisher's bottom line, taking Amazon with it in the process. Maybe Amazon could exert more pressure on the publishers to reduce prices; it doesn't seem that many publishers are listening to consumers. No. WDE. Last edited by Wetdogeared; 04-04-2009 at 12:22 PM. |

I think it's a silly boycott. It won't make a difference, and arbitrary price points are a bad idea. There's been very little increase in prices (most are still $9.99 or lower) and if you're willing to pay more for a book, why not? And if $9.99 is too much for you, hold out for cheaper prices.

The only books I'm personally 'boycotting' right now are the books where the publisher is charging more than the pbook.
Harper Collins for example has taken to charging $14.99 for some ebooks while the paper version is $7.99 IMO that's ridiculous and I'd love to know what they're thinking. |
