Scribe auto-rotation...

Please tell me someone has found how to stop it auto-rotating.

It is driving me nuts as I tend to like to lie on my side when reading in bed and the rotation is driving me up the wall...

Grr.

Are you using the stock Kindle reading app? Because AFAIK it only flips the text 180 degrees and does not properly "rotate" (basically it doesn't automatically switch from landscape to portrait mode); this shouldn't normally trigger by just lying on one's side.

What am I missing? It's actually a feature I'd be glad to have

I take it the scenario is that when Scribe is rotated sideways to match orientation of a reader lying horizontally in bed on their side, it will flip with minor adjustments, because with respect to gravity the screen is exactly 50% between up and down.

It is the worst reading position possible. Sit up and assume a proper reading position!

And yes I do it sometimes, against my own will, when I'm tired and should just put the thing aside and sleep.

In KOReader you can fix the Portrait/Portrait orientation (or Landscape/Landscape), so it will rotate only when rotating by at least 180 degrees…

Who says? I lay on my side, both left and right,and read this way every single night. I have a Scribe, but it would be too large for me to do that comfortably.

I suppose you have trained yourself well.

But it's at odds with natural body response to relax and sleep when horizontal, and not so good for focused attention. I need all the attention I can get for some of my reading, if I'm trying to learn something or follow plot twists.

I can read Scribe for short periods on my back holding with both hands. Otherwise sitting up and having it rest on my lap or surface is what I do.

I actually get more reading done and can focus better when I'm lying down on my side, because I'm most comfortable that way. If I'm sitting at a table I'm never comfortable, and if I'm sitting on a sofa or an easy chair I'm more worried about holding the book comfortably--putting it on my lap is no good because then I'm looking down (bad for my neck to be looking down all the time) and if I'm holding it up my arms get tired and I'm thinking about that.

Note that all of this pertains to reading for pleasure...if I'm studying or reading something for work I sit at my desk, and in that case I'm usually reading and taking notes at the same time.

It just goes to show that different people have different ways of doing things...and that's ok. It be a incredibly boring world if we all did everything the same way and liked the same things!

Nothing to do with "training myself." I have terrible vision and have worn glasses since I was 6 years old, my prescription is about 20/700. But...I can see up close. So it's a pleasure for me to lay on my side, sans glasses, hold the Paperwhite about 7-8" from my face, and read away. I can also use my iPad mini this way. I'm turning 66 in 2 days...I've read this way in bed for many years.

The Scribe switches the display orientation from upright to inverted portrait when the device gets *just about past 90 degrees* if lying on one's side.

Apologies for the confusion!

Back in the day it was possible to edit setup/config files to change behaviour...is this still possible?

This is what confuses me, as the Scribe doesn't natively support automatic 90-degree, landscape-to-portrait (or portrait-to-landscape) rotation. It only supports 180-degree rotation. This is actually a long-requested feature which many of us would like to have!

Therefore I assume your Scribe is jailbroken, and you are in fact using KOReader. If this is indeed the case, you can control the automatic 90-degree rotation through this menu item:

Gear icon —> Screen —> Rotation —> Lock auto rotation to current orientation

The unit is completely vanilla/stock with the standard Kindle reader...perhaps I should jailbreak it, although I still like to occasionally buy books from the store.

Indeed there doesn’t seem to be a way to disable the auto-rotation in the stock reader; interestingly I did a test with my Scribe and for some reason my accelerometer seems to be calibrated very differently than yours, as in order to trigger the rotation I really have to flip the device around; 90 degrees is nowhere near the “tipping point”. That’s probably the reason why I never even realized there was no option to turn it off.

It is possible to do so in KOReader though, in case you need some motivation to make the switch

OK, two questions...can one go back to a "stock" firmware after jailbreaking?

Sadly no, and I don't think it's on the roadmap either. Also it's worth knowing that KOReader doesn't support the Kindle file types (except MOBI but even then the support is limited), so you do have to DeDRM your books and convert them to EPUB, which can be a pain depending on your use case.

Yes, KOReader is just an app, it doesn't replace the Kindle OS; you can exit it and go right back into the standard Kindle UI. I normally use KOReader for reading, and switch back to the Kindle UI when I need to take notes, etc.

If your question was more about a total removal of the jailbreak including KOReader and any other hacks, this is also possible and is normally achieved by re-applying a firmware update twice.
