Replacement Kindle software?
A few years ago, I thought I saw software discussed that was a replacement of the reading software for jailbroken kindles. I cannot find that anymore.
Now that Amazon is basically saying "Walled garden" even more than before, I'm looking at saying "Give me better reading software" for 3's and 4's (non-touch). Am I mistaken, or does such software exist, and where? |

Probably KOReader. It has its own forum here.

Yes I guess KOReader will work on those: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kindle_Serial_Numbers
For older devices there was another project that I once installed on a Kindle 2. I cannot remember the name of it at the moment but there should be some old threads about it here. Last edited by tomsem; 02-17-2025 at 01:14 AM. |

It's arguable if KOReader is better. It does let you read epubs, but it doesn't affect what a Kindle does when you connect to WiFi. It has no metadata library, though it can search a Calibre saved file of it. But if you have Calibre and never connect to WiFi you can use azw3 (or KFX, but not easily on Linux) from epub.
KOReader is file browser based like non-library old PC programs, but lets you over-ride broken things in an epub. If the epub is sensibly formatted and converted to azw3 (or even KFX) using Calibre, then there is little value to KOReader and no sort/search by Author/Title or having collections with titles in more than one collection. KOReader doesn't at all stop any Amazon activity on a Registered Kindle when WiFi is on and if a Kindle isn't registered it's a bit crippled even if it's jailbroken. |

I like Koreader and have it on most of my devices, including my PC, tablet and phone. But also of course my eInk devices.
The things I like are:
Now to be fair, a lot of this comes from having different devices and wanting the same/similar features. e.g. if you only have Kindles you can use Whispersync and Kosync doesn't add anything. Also COPS has a web interface which the device's browser can use to download from, although I find OPDS easier. |

KOReader is sure better than the Kindle software on old 3th and 4th generation Kindles. Modern Kindles have more options and personally I consider patched native software on my Kobos good enough to not need KOReader. YMMV.
