Very slow page turns

My Libra 2, bought March 2024 has worked perfectly until yesterday.
The page turns now are so slow that it's practicall useless.
As far as I know I have not changed anything.
Please help!

One book or all?
PDFs can be slow.

Try power off (not sleep) and on.

Thanks for quick reply.
It works OK on other books - and on my very very old kindle and on even older kindle keyboard. (They use mobi files made by calibre from the epub files.)
All books are sideloaded epubs.
Tried powering off on - no effect.
May go back to calibre and delete from device and reload.

Tried that - no effect.
Will continue reading this book on kindle because the story is very good then go back to using the kono.
If anyone has any suggestions as to why one book is slow please post here.
I will keep looking here. Thanks.

Maybe share details of the book or even use the ScrambleEbook calibre plugin to create a randomized, scrambled copy of the book which we can look at and provide advice

With epub books, the things I've found that make them slow are:
  • Large TOC
  • Large chapters
  • large images
  • javascript

There really shouldn't be any javascript in an epub All the ones I've seen were web pages that were converted to epubs and not fully stripped of web stuff, but who knows.

Large chapters are split by calibre automatically if you convert it. It can also reduce resolution of images, but I don't remember if that's automatic. Either way, an epub to epub conversion in calibre might help.

PDFs have their own issues that can be fixed with a conversion, but I assume that's not the issue here.

I haven't found that large TOC or large chapters make an ebook slow. Bad formatting can do that, and the case of the whole book being a single huge html file.

As an experiment, you can try converting the mobi to a new epub. That can be a... I don't want to say good, but effective way of stripping out problematic elements of a really badly made epub.

So a "broken" epub. The kindle Mobi is only HTML3 and only limited inline styles. An epub is HTML5 and CSS3 (approximately).

Open the epub in Calibre Editor and check it. Two checkers can be installed.

EDIT:
Unless it's a K1, K2, DX or DXG, it can update to 3.x.x something and have hugely better azw3 than rubbish mobi format. I upgraded my K3 Keyboard and it's fine for what it it with azw3.

Calibre can't split the epub files the Saxon Chronicle downloaded from Gutenberg as epub3! No headings anywhere. Actually it's ghastly formatting so I have a bit fixed version. I've not split the two big HTML files yet.

Then you haven't tried books that are large enough. :->

Try the CIA World Factbook. Use to keep it on my device, but it's so slow it's no fun to read or search. Not the worst example, but it's a handy one.

And by "chapter" I meant "huge html file". Agree bad formatting is part of the problem.

I have larger books than that. True, search is slower than in shorter books, but page turns are just fine.

Thanks very much - that worked!

Mobi on a Kobo is an after-thought. It's not all that good. It's best to ignore Mobi on a Kobo.

OP already said "all books are sideloaded epubs", so I'm not sure how that's relevant.
