DAVID LYNCH - film director with an unlimited creative imagination dies

RIP.

Died two days ago, but confirmed Jan. 16.

An incredible director who explored the boundaries between reality and the surreal, often blending the two together.

Twin peaks
The Elephant Man
Blue Velvet
Mulholland Drive
Eraserhead

Yes! The fictional Laura Palmer [actress Sheryl Lee].

So, fellow Film Lounge members (aka: We who love the Criterian Channel ): What was your favorite film from this creative genius?

Yes, a great loss. Twin Peaks, one of my favourite shows.
Let's not forget Dune (1984) as one of his many credits.

I had forgotten about Dune, which I thought failed to capture the mystery of Herbert's novel.

I know Lynch had his name removed from the credits.

Although I can read wiki (for further background info), do you have some thoughts on the film?

My favorite movie of his is probably The Straight Story. It’s probably his most mainstream movie but I find it heartfelt and moving.

My favourite of his movies would be The Elephant Man. OTOH, my least favourite of his works that I've seen was Twin Peaks: The Return. I enjoyed Twin Peaks but TP: The Return was cold pancakes and no honey.

Hmm, not really. I liked the film, but it's not one of my favourites. It was good for its time, a bit like Flash Gordon- memorable films, but not really ones I like to sit down and rewatch. I also liked the newer Dune movies, and I noticed the influence of the extended universe by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert in those and Dune Prophecy, mainly in the backstory. Dune Prophecy is all the extended universe, not the original books.

I have yet to read anything by Kevin J Anderson and Brian Herbert. What is the first one you would suggest?

Having said that, I plan to watch Dune again, to see if my original impression has changed since its release 31 years ago.

There is a correct timeline reading list in the first post of this thread... https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=354716
There are 12 short stories in the list and the first in the list is a short story. They were all freebies either at Tor or Kevin J Andersons website, so I can pass them onto you if you want. They don't really add much to the overall narrative, but for me it was just for completeness.

I am quite coincidentally in the middle of a book about Hollywood flops and this anecdote from the Dune set about Sting made me laugh:

Quote:
One fellow actor who had not been forewarned of the singer's arrival, and had no idea why he was famous, was Patrick Stewart, whose attempt to break the ice soon stranded him in an excruciating cul-de-sac. "You play in a police band?"
