Why would you factory reset after doing a jailbreak?

try installing hotfix via MRPI's `;log mrpi` ( after placing hotfix bin mrpackages folder ) and then restore OTA binaries , Then install the update and reset like 2-3 times

I tried to follow this guide, but I am unable do step 7 (enter ";log mrpi") due to it being unable to complete setup to get to the store to enter that. It says "Something went wrong. An error occurred while downloading the update. Please try again or check your Wi-Fi connection to continue." and will stay stuck on this screen despite my attempts to restart the kindle and my router. Any help? |

@mjrsnk since you have Kindle ColorSoft and that model so far didn't have any firmware updates you will unfortunately have to wait for that to happen to then be able to manually download the firmware bin file from Amazon's page and transfer it to your Kindle via USB cable. Does you Kindle while stuck at that setup stage even exports the storage over USB cable??
(Re)installing the firmware should restore the OTA binary files. But like I said: at this moment there isn't anything to be downloaded for Kindle ColorSoft. |

@mjrsnk You didn't answer the most important question I've asked you:
Quote:
If it DOESN'T do that how do you expect to copy over that future firmware update bin file to that Kindle device? Your problems with getting stuck isn't down to nothing new for ColorSoft to download from Amazon's servers it's because something tried to run missing OTA binary file and doesn't handle the error correctly, something like that. If the device isn't visible to your computer then that ColorSoft is a permanent brick, nothing can be done to fix it. @HackerDude What is the state of various elements of "jailbreak bridge" system of scripts after user does a factory reset? Is bridge.conf still there and does that Upstart job even run? If it runs and checks for existence of "emergency.sh" then that script could? potentially be used to undo the ota binaries rename. Provided that device is able to add emergency.sh file while in that soft-bricked state. |

I also have a second colorsoft available to me at the moment that does work. Would I be able to use the working colorsoft to restore the one that is currently not working due to not being able to update after blocking OTA updates?

Maybe you could try adding shell script code to rename those 2 ota files ( = undo the rename) back to original names into file named "emergency.sh" and copy it to top level of exported Kindle drive over USB cable? And then force a reboot by holding the power button on Kindle for >15 seconds.
I'm not sure what would be the state of the "bridge" Upstart job after doing a factory reset on device with firmware 5.17.1 or newer. If it still runs that job it should check for the existence of "/mnt/us/emergency.sh" and execute any code you put there. What did you use originally to rename ota binaries? KUAL extension "renameotabin" or @Marek's "scriptlet" from Discord severe or that thing that does both OTA rename and disables sending logs to Amazon? |

Similar situation with Kindle Scribe
I am unable to go past the screen where Kindle signs you in and tries to download the update but it's disabled from RenameOTABin Script when we jailbroke our kindle.
So trying to somehow get access to these system files and restore them to old state. #!/bin/sh mntroot rw cd /usr/bin mv otaupd.bck otaupd mv otav3.bck otav3 mntroot ro reboot This is all they have inside the restore.sh script but how can I execute it on startup? |
