Is there anywhere that has free audiobooks of public domain books?

I have searched for the last hour for audiobooks I can download and listen to for free. Even my Kindle Unlimited I already pay for, charges if I want to listen to an audiobook. I tried the library but I don't know what books, I want to find a site that lists "bedtime" reading as I have horrible anxiety and need something comforting to listen to.

Many voices are like finger-nails on a chalkboard, so has anyone found good ole classic audiobooks that are wonderful to listen to, and Android is what I need. I don't know if my old Kindle would support my bluetooth speaker very well, but my phone works great with bluetooth. I also have tinnitus so I have to be able to turn up the sound as needed to drown out ringing in my ears.

Thanks, really hoping for some help here, free apps only please. If I have to pay for every book, may as well pay Kindle Unlimited but I'd really like to ditch that.

Librivox.org has free audiobooks of books which are in the public domain, read by volunteers. They have several recordings of The Secret Garden:

I'm sure you'll believe this, but when I go to install the app, I see I also have to pay Amazon I guess they have taken over even public domain book

I'm pretty sure that public domain laws are sketchy in this area. New recording is fully protected by copyright laws, no matter the condition of the source material.

Regardless, Archive.org has a big collection. Check them out when they are fully back. I tend to avoid librivox, even though they have librivox recordings up there as well. Another poorly documented and organised archive that they have are their radio stations. They have full BBC Radio 4 Extra, for example. There's a ton of fantastic radio plays and book adaptations up there. They're spanning decades back, with some shows flawlessly acted.

A few favourites:
1985 Raffles: https://archive.org/details/RafflesBBCr4
1981 Lord of the Rings: https://archive.org/details/the-lord...webamp=default
Complete Waugh: https://archive.org/details/BBCr4Brideshead

I'm not a big audiobook person, but I do now sometimes use my Pocketbook Era to listen to a book before bed.

I really, truly enjoyed the Librivox.org reading of Treasure Island by Adrian Praetzellis, he made it come to life with different voices for the characters, and it was just so fun!

You can also try apps like Audiobooks or Open Culture. They have a good selection of classic audiobooks available for free.

Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/) - Along with the text versions of public domain books, Project Gutenberg also offers some free audiobook recordings.

Just to throw in a different perspective although not free but usually very cheap - have you looked at charity shops/ thrift stores? they usually have audio book cds/ tapes for very little money. Although you may have to buy a cheap cd player/ tape player unless you already have them kicking about. This also has the advantage of not using a screen device (tablet etc) to listen to your audio books - so no distractions.

If you have a windows pc, and a android phone, it is entirely possible to turn any ebook into an audio book. I kinda figured it some time ago, and use it tons. With your pc, you will first have to remove the drm. I know calibre can do it, myself, I bought and use epubor, it was like 50 bucks. It removes the drm pretty easy. I then put Moon reader pro on my android, last I saw it was like 7 bucks for a life time license.

After I remove the drm from my kendal book, I move the drm free ebook to to my phone so I can use it on moon reader pro. After I open on moon reader pro, Moon reader pro has a text to speech engine. I use a Google voice, which is free and already on my phone. Works great. There are several free google voices to choose from. They sound amazing. So that is how I take my amazon books that I bought, put them on my phone, and with moon reader pro, turn it into a audio book. I never share kendal books. I just remove the drm so I can read the book on my android phone, or tablet. Then sometimes I read them, sometimes I listen to them.

Epubor automatically finds your kendal books you download to your computer. So after you download your book to read it, open epubor, and it will have it and simply drag and drop, and poof, no more drm. Its such a simple and easy process. Hope that helps.

Does it actually produce some audio file, or are you just using text to speech?
