![]() Out of curiosity, which version did you choose? (AlReader seems to be the most popular). If you've got working ADB, it's definitely a help with that creaky CWM. I only thought of that workaround after I had done all the development and testing (a true face-palm moment...). But now we know. I hope you find the reader serves you well, and I think you can see that it isn't that difficult to just change the whole thing to some other configuration now that you have the CWM card made. |

I went with Cool Reader. Only because I have used it before on an old tablet. I haven't played with the ST much other than getting everything set up as per the start up guide though.

Denatured alcohol will remove the sticky layer if it ever comes back.

2 month update: The NST with @nmyshkin's Phoenix Project rework has been working great! It's one of my work place e readers so it's constantly with me being used. I've only had one hiccup when it randomly froze when I came to read on it after a week of not using it. I was able to manually restart it and no problem since then.
The Phoenix Project rework didn't take long to set up how I wanted it to run but there's enough customization-if a little slow-that you can tinker with it for a while to get it just right. If you dont want to tweak it, it can be used as is after the rework and it would still be usable. To me this is a solid daily day time use e reader for sideloaded books only no PDF. I do like the recessed screen and the clarity to me is great I don't see the fuzziness people talk about sometimes when it comes to these old e readers. Hell occasionally certain words look a little floaty on the screen.I got lucky that my buttons and faceplate weren't too tacky feeling and still arent. I have since discovered that vinyl skins like for cars are made for e readers and they are still made for the NST. If Armour All lets me down I'll vinyl the thing and keep using it. One thing though is the plastic band around the faceplate is white. Does that mean anything? I know I don't have a Glowlight NST but most NST I've seen the band is black. |

If I can figure out how to take the device out of its flippy flap case without breaking something, I might be tempted to try that denatured alcohol on a few spots that feel extra tacky. The rest of the back that I can feel aren't that bad but a few spots around the edge of the back do feel more sticky.

Apologies for the semi-necro. On my NST, the armor-all treatment was a temporary fix. And it was very shiny. When it started to wear off, I used vinyl electrical tape, the matte finish kind, not the glossy kind, to cover the bezels. The tape is the perfect width. As a bonus, it holds together the part of the bezel that was starting to crack/crumble. It has been nearly 2 years and the tape has held up. I guess it could be called a home-made vinyl skin.

The software for the nook is broken. So IMHO, don't bother with another nook. B&N removed hyphenation.

Perhaps you could accept that the Nook isn't for you and move on? Opinions weren't being sought. The poster was talking about his DIY fix; nothing more. No need to anti-proselytize.

Lol. I've been using my NST since late 2011. It opens epubs and renders text just fine for the things I read on it. I just wanted to point out what I thought was a more permanent solution than armor-all. Added advantage, the tape comes in more colors than just black, so if you want a different bezel color, say to match the white plastic band around the faceplate, that's possible. I've lurked long enough to have a passing acquaintance with some of the sorts of posts the regulars make. No worries.

I always say take care of your things and they'll last a long time. You did that thus I applaud you Hasdrubal👏 I hope your NST has many more years of reading
![]() I'll keep the vinyl tape idea open as I do like the mental image of a coloured ST. And not having to disassemble the ST every month or two to give it its armour all. |

@Scoob: Thanks for keeping us updated on your project. Regarding the vinyl skins you mentioned, I haven't seen any for the NST. Did you come across them on Amazon?

I bought a NST in 2012 and it's still going strong. I passed it along to a family member when I upgraded to the Glowlight 3 and then the 7.8" Glowlight Plus. Every time I see that old NST, I'm reminded what a beautiful screen it has. It really was one of B&N's best. Alas, it's developed the sticky case. Tried isopropyl alcohol (70% and 90%), didn't do anything. Don't have any denatured to try. I've done all the things recommended online: talcum powder, rubbing in some light machine oil, a magic eraser... nope. Finally purchased some armor all and also found it to be temporary (though it was great at first). Thought about using steel wool, but I'd rather attempt that after getting the back case off. And teardown instructions indicate the power button needs to be pried off, which makes me wary of breaking something. Me + fragile plastic = broken. I've seen photos of duct-taped NSTs. Can't bring myself to do that, even though I come from a long line of "if it can't be fixed with duct tape, it can't be fixed at all" types. ![]() Two years is impressive. No problems with it peeling or collecting gunk in the edges of the tape? |

@RWTS in regard to the vinyl skins for NST I had ran into them on Amazon when I first got my ST in September, but I haven't found them again. What is still available is this silicone sleeve thing that completely covers the ST right up to the screen. The link is for Ebay but it's on Amazon too. Depending on how steady your hand is and how high your patience you can make your own vinyl skin as sheets of the stuff are sold in tubes for like $20-25 I've found them in Walmart, craft stores, and also automotive stores
I'd try cornstarch too but it might work just like the talc. It sucks the Armour All didn't work for you as it was the least messy and easiest to apply in my case. I do have to apply regularly when it's warm or I've used it a lot. |

The Armor-All treatment was never intended as a one-and-done, just as when using in your car. It's a maintenance approach which doesn't involve strenuous abrasion of the already compromised material which could just as easily crack or fall apart if worked on to vigorously. My $0.02.
A case/cover really makes a difference as well. Very little of my NST other than the screen is exposed when I'm reading, and it's all covered when I'm not. For me the Armor-All is maybe a once-year job or perhaps if I have some reason to remove the case. Having used electrical tape for many years, I would be leery of applying it to the bezel, but as the NST can't possibly last forever, perhaps it does not matter. I would be far more concerned about constant use of the hardware buttons to turn pages. The two devices I got for development of the Phoenix Project both had issues with the bezel where I was constantly using the buttons for testing. The material either cracked or small pieces literally fell out, leaving a hole. Whether sticky or gooey, the bezel material is of far more concern than the back. I know many people are devoted to turning pages with buttons. I'm just sayin'.... |
