How to export highlights with chapter/location?
I read a lot of non-fiction books. Being able to export highlights is very important to me. I really like the export highlights feature in Kindle. It shows chapter names and locations.
I added the setting in the config file in my Libra 2. I now can export highlights. But not having chapter names is a big disappointment especially for huge books. Is there anyway to have chapter names in the exported file just like Kindle does? Thanks a lot. |

I get chapter and location.
There are 3 or 4 methods. I use Kobo Utilities on Calibre and copy/paste the bookmarks/highlights/annotations. You can also edit the Kobo conf file so a long press on any title also has the Export bookmarks/highlights/annotations as a text file. But I only tested that a couple of years ago. I think you did this and I have no idea why it's not got chapter and location. I've not used the Annotations Plug-in on Calibre for years. The Kobo Utilities on Calibre is the most convenient and "bookmarks/highlights/annotations" is one of the reasons I'd never go back to Kindle. |

Thanks a lot for both your responses! I edited "Kobo eReader.conf" file to export the highlights. But I don't see the chapter name/location information on my Libra 2.
hatuluang, Thanks for the info. I checked the post and a couple of sample exports in the thread. I don't see chapter names/locations in them though. I need at least chapter names to tell where those highlights are from. Thanks again. |

The annotations export option that you can enable in the configuration file only exports the raw text that you highlighted. If you want chapter names, you'd have to add them as annotations to every highlight (or at least at the start of every new chapter, since highlights should be exported in order of appearance in the book).

Thanks a lot again for all the responses. I recently upgraded to a 6.8 in Kindle Paperwhite and also bought a Libra 2. Libra 2 has something that I like a lot. The screen is crisper, brighter, and somehow feels bigger though it is only 0.2 in difference. I also like how the TOC is presented, not to mention the great support for Pocket and OverDrive. The highlight export is the main and critical thing that prevents me from using it more.
hatuluang, Many thanks. I checked out the post and zip file. I have no idea how to install it or use it. Anywhere I can find a readme file or installation guide? I am comfortable with coding in general, just not familiar with the code used there. Also I just want to export highlights of a book at a time. I imagine I will eventually have many books with highlights. I don't want to have the highlights from all the books exported in one file every time I export. Anyway to do that? Quoth, Thanks a lot. I heard of Calibre a lot in Kobo community. Though it is not only for Kobo, it looks like a lot of Kobo users have that. I guess I just have to try it together with Kobo Utilities to see how it goes. Kindle has two ways, from app and ereaders, to export highlights and the formats are different. The one from ereaders exports a spreadsheet and a pdf file. The one from the app exports a html file. All of them are fantastic. I attached the screenshot of a html file here. Isn't it nice? I wish Kobo will come up with something similar. |

1. Change the Kobo Configuration files as you've done. 2. following the thread of https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=349637 First, install nickelmenu (link:https://pgaskin.net/NickelMenu/#about) Attached is the annotation code in NM config file and compilation of NM shortcut and code. Second, download notes-20230804.zip, extract it, and put the folder notes under .adds folder. You will find the shortcut to execute it in Nickelmenu. 3. You can use annotation plugin in Calibre (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=2853161) 4. You can use Kobo utilities in Calibre to copy annotation in selected book as mention by @Quoth Hope it helps. |

Thanks a lot for the good summary for annotation export. I tried Calibre with KOBO Utilities plug-in. I encountered several problems. I have posted my questions under the KOBO Utilities plug-in thread as instructed in the help file. Hope they can be resolved soon. Thanks.

Free tool to export your Kobo ereader highlights
My name is Henk, from the Netherlands. I found this especially difficult to get my highlights from my ereader so I made a tool for this. When I got it working I decided to make a website to make it available for others for free.
The tool is at www.kobohighlightsexport.com If you like the tool please consider making a donation on the website, thanks! Have a good day, Henk |
