That's normal for the repair the account procedure since the database is rebuilt and other information is wiped. I've never synced a Kobo ereader to fix a problem but that should not wipe the database but if you deleted device.xml, it's likely to wipe the annotations stored in the Digital Editions directory.

If you are using calibre and the KoboUtility plugin, you might want to look at setting up a database backup.

Which file?

The database? KoboReader.sqlite lives in the .kobo directory.

The activation file? It's a hidden file that lives in the .adobe-digital-editions directory in the root of the exposed storage.

The Adobe annotation files? They live in the Digital Editions directory in the root of the exposed storage.

I did look in the .adobe-digital-editions folder, but there was no activation file. Is this separate from Kobo activation? If so, it’s possible I’ve never done it.

I followed the steps in this tutorial, copying everything except the .kobo folder, then adding the edited version of KoboReader.sqlite, so that would mean the device.xml was the one copied from the Aura H2O.

Activation.xml is a hidden file and would be created when you connect your Kobo to your computer, ADE is run and you activate your Kobo. The only reason I have it present is was for library borrows before Kobo ereaders could sync borrowed library books. Now I only worry about it for those few occasions where the Kobo store either does not have the ebook or has a different edition in which case the download and sideload procedure is still needed.

I don’t feel like this is getting me any closer to my goal. It’s not clear that Adobe activation is required for transferring annotations/reading progress. It’s certainly not needed to actually make annotations.

It’s a pity Kobo don’t make this easy.

Sorry for the resurrection.

I'm trying to move from a Libra 2 to a Libra Colour. I'm on a Mac so I have to use a different DB app (DB Browser), so it's hard to follow the directions exactly since the menus aren't the same. I think I'm copying the correct info though.

I'm copying the row of info that starts with:

UserID UserKey UserDisplayName UserEmail ___DeviceID, etc

When I paste that info into the old DB and copy it over to my kobo, none of my annotations are in place. Am I copying the correct info?

1/you have to copy all the folders and files from your first kobo to the new device except the folder .kobo.
2/ go to .kobo on your old device, copy KoboReader.sqlite on your computer, do the same on your new device to saved it in case something went wrong
3/switch on your new kobo and log to your kobo account
4/ download and instal SQLite Expert Personal from http://www.sqliteexpert.com/download.html
5/ connect your new kobo to your computer
6/launch SQLite Expert, go to File/Open Database and open .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite on your new kobo
7/clic on the "user" database, click on "Data" , right-click on the data line and finally on "Copy Records"
8/Still in SQLite Expert, go to File/Open Database and open the KoboReader.sqlite of your old kobo that you have saved on your computer
9/ go to user/data, right-click on the data line and finally on "Delete Selected Rows"
10/ clic on the green "+" to add a new row, right clic on it and "paste records"
11/paste the file KoboReader.sqlite (the one you have saved on your computer and you just have modified) on your new device
12/enjoy!
I have a mac, and i get stuck on step 7, I click on 'user' but then i dont know where to click, i dont see any ´Data'

I once migrated from Kobo Nia to Kobo Clara BW, and I noticed that some tables in the KoboReader.sqlite database had new fields added. I'm not sure if the issue with annotations not syncing was caused by directly copying this database to the new Kobo.

When copying KoboReader.sqlite, you should manually compare each table in the new database with the old one. Add any missing fields to ensure consistency, and finally, place the updated database into the new Kobo.

I just registered to tell you that I am very happy and grateful for this detailed explanation and step-by-step in 2021.

It still works! I just moves my libraby from my old and trusty Aura H20 (V1) to the Clara BW. Even though they have different firmware-versions (both from the same date according to: https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html but still different) --> Worked perfectly!
