I did get a refund from Kobo when this happened to me. The book I purchased was in PDF instead of epub, so I contacted them and got a refund (store credit, though) within a day. That was a good call, too, because if they had refused, none of the purchase I made since then would have taken place.

I'm a fairly loyal customer in general and don't worry too much if something may be marginally cheaper elsewhere, right up until I feel I get screwed over -- and then I'm done and gone. This is also the reason why I annoy my staff at my company when it comes to the importance of providing quality customer support.

Since I'm pretty sure that many people are like this, too, it's even more baffling to see approaches like the one discussed here. It makes no sense to me.

So, is Adobe secretly hoping to force publishers into abandoning DRM?
Otherwise I really don't see how any of this makes any sense.

It's nice to hear that Kobo CS is getting better about that, but if the new DRM doesn't allow you to read a book on your reader of choice, a store credit won't do you any good.

"People will forget what you said (did), but they will always remember how you made them feel."

It's one of the very first things I learned in a communications course a long time ago, and I always try to remember that. It's one of the very few quotes I find to be very true.

I wonder if anyone outside Adobe thinks this is a good idea, to me it seams like they are on a crash course to alienate everyone.

After they moved all of their applications to the cloud, basically forcing a subscription, I switched to RAWTherapee and The Gimp for my private photo editing. Nowadays, they're good enough. The only Adobe stuff I still use are Flash and Acrobat Reader, because I can't do without them (yet).

Now they're fracking up ebooks as well.

Adobe is too big and they're annoying me by trying to be everywhere at once if it comes to media.

It's times like this when I'm glad to have a substantial ebook TBR pile. If worst comes to worst, I can simply stop buying DRM'd books until this whole mess gets sorted out...which I'm confident will happen by the new scheme getting cracked. After all, if your computer is able to decrypt the book at all, then it's possible for someone to crack the process and permanently remove the encryption. The only question is how long it'll take to figure that out - and given past history, I'm betting on the hackers.

I know other people have had problems at Kobo especially after Kobo stopped showing what format the book was in. Kobo was refusing refunds even though their website said it would work on most ereaders and it was kepub only - there was no download link.

Amazon will give you a refund on any book. Another reason to go all Amazon for ebooks.
Kobo kepubs can be read on any ereader in the same way that Amazon ebooks can be read on any ereader: by removing DRM and converting to the format of your choice. (The DRM used on Kobo kepubs is not Adobe DRM.) A Kobo app is needed to download the kepub book if you don't have a Kobo device, just as those without an Amazon device need to download using an Amazon app.

Will using the Kobo app guarantee you're going to get a kepub?

There was no download link at all on their website, so there was no way to download - is that how a kepub only would work? I think the person said it wouldn't download to the Kobo for pc app either. It wasn't me, so I may have some info wrong. I just remember that they couldn't read the book and Kobo refused a refund.

This may have been the book. I have it in my library and there is no download options Heaven Is Paved with Oreos

Yes. When you launch the Kobo app or sync your Kobo device, your "bookmarked items" should automatically download to that machine...and I know that for Windows, there are scripts that turn Kobo's protection backwards and let you extract the decrypted book.

What happened in 2006? Was it a situation like this?
After Adobe introduce CS4, they forced everyone to move to CS4 from CS3 in 2009. If you have PDFs (no ePubs back then) encrypted using CS3, you had a window of just nine months (April toDecember 2009) to do the operations necessary to transfer them to CS4 encryption. If you missed that nine month window, your encrypted PDFs could no longer be accessed at all.

Yes, a very similar situation, except that there were far fewer encrypted PDFs around than there are now encrypted ePubs.

Nice to have the keypub approach for potential back up, for sure. But man... under the hood, the kepub's coding is considerably uglier than the same title's "normal" epub version. I figured they'd be basically the same. Oh well.

If the book is an Adobe DRM epub then the Kobo app/device will download a Kobo DRM kepub.

If the book is a DRM-free epub, then the Kobo app/device will download either a Kobo DRM-free kepub, or in some cases a plain DRM-free epub.

If the book is not in an epub format then you won't get a kepub or epub, of course. (You can check the format before you buy: from the device/app look in the book details; or from the website add a preview of the book to your library and look for the download options in the library listing).
