It is.
That suggests Nook can seal their walled garden by doing an Amazon-style deal with Overdrive and letting Adept compatibility fade away.

Agreed. I envision that unless this new DRM scheme is broken, and quickly, that my DRM-free TBR list is going to be receiving a lot of long-overdue attention, because I will NOT be buying books I cannot own. I'll be dammed if I'll tie the future of my library to the continued success of any one company. The entire history of business is that businesses come and go. I want books that will be readable and researchable even if Adobe goes belly-up; which, judging from the way they've been ticking off their customer base lately with their decision to move all their apps to the cloud and their schemes to screw over customers who read on electronic devices, may come sooner rather than later.

I use Nook for PC, but they removed that for a while, didn't they? So yeah, they could continue to shoot themselves in the foot.

I guess it will be Amazon only for me soon.

The issue isn't Adobe going out of business so much as Adobe walking away from the DRM business. Adobe isn't making much money off Adept and at some point the beancounters are going to squawk so they might spin the unit to off sink or swim on its own. And then "sink" would be a likely option.

Not even that.

At the moment RMSDK10 supports the older RMSDK9-encryption. So all your old books will work with new readers.

What happens in another five years, when RMSDK11 and CS6 (say) come out, and support for the 'obsolete' RMSDK9 encryption is dropped?

This is the problem for all DRM schemes. How long can you expect the scheme to be supported on new devices?

Encrypted Mobipocket ebooks are now pretty much unreadable
CS3 encrypted PDFs are now pretty much unreadable
.LIT encrypted ebooks are now pretty much unreadable
.rb rocket encrypted ebooks are now pretty much unreadable
.pdb Palm encrypted ebooks are now pretty much unreadable

How long before the current ADE-encrypted ePub books become unreadable?

What happened in 2006? Was it a situation like this?

I wonder what market Adobe is thinking of with this current move. Is this really what e-bookstores were asking for?

This is quoted from the "Getting Started With ADOBE DIGITAL EDITIONS 3.0" epub from Adobe.

Quote:
Bookseller-specific IDs
Some booksellers use a special form of protection where your book is locked to the bookseller’s ID. For example, Barnes & Noble uses this method. When you buy a book, download to your computer, and open in ADE, you’ll be asked to supply the username and unlock code you use on the bookseller’s web site (for example, for Barnes & Noble, the name and number of the credit card associated with your ebook purchase).
I download all my B&N ebooks to cabilre from the download button, using the tools I do not have to use ADE or Nook for PC.

I hope that someone can figure out how to use ADE3 with linux/wine or Adobe() will release a linux version.

B&N don't support Macs outside of the US (books won't download from the store, which is pretty basic), so that loses them a chunk of market.

Very grateful to The Apprentice & Calibre right about now - and I no longer regret that Kobo binge I went on during the holidays.

I'm in the 'Over DRM Shenanigans' category. I also won't buy a book I can't own, so Amazon will be getting my business, and if they follow this demented path, it'll be back to the used bookstore for me. I don't go in for too many bestsellers anyway, so at least for me the problem is solved.

I love my eInk readers, and have a mountain of a TBR pile, but I think I'm done giving money to companies that are determined to treat their paying customers like shoplifters. I'll find something else to read rather than continue to support this.

Surely if people start wanting refunds on ebooks that no longer work on ereaders, the publishers and stores will have to take notice and look at other ways rather than Adobe DRM.

Could be much earlier. At 4:40 in the video from post #319 they say that they are planning the next radically new RMSDK, incorporating epub3, for June THIS YEAR.

B&N does not give refunds. I bought a book once and it was a single short story instead of the book of short stories. The website said it was a book of short stories and I had to argue with three people to get a refund. It was only 99 cents but I was not going to pay for something I did not receive.

I know other people have had problems at Kobo especially after Kobo stopped showing what format the book was in. Kobo was refusing refunds even though their website said it would work on most ereaders and it was kepub only - there was no download link.

Amazon will give you a refund on any book. Another reason to go all Amazon for ebooks.

Man, I hate to hear that, especially it happening in a big metro area like Philly. My 2nd favorite closed shop last year - Owner and Cat retired. It had a corner bar sort of vibe, really irreplaceable. Hate to see any of them go.

If necessary there's the internet sites, like Abebooks, not to mention swap sites like Book Crossing, which I loved back in my pbook days.

My old eInk devices work just fine with my Alf'd books, and I'm fortunate enough to be a re-reader with a large collection. If I have to skip certain new titles in digital due to this nonsense, so be it. Money is the only thing that will impact their decisions, and even then I have my doubts they'll get the message. Probably blame piracy rather than their own self-defeating desperate grasping after a dying business formula.
