All of them except for Kindles which use a different DRM system. No current ebook reader uses RMSDK10 which is required to be able to read books with the new DRM system.

Okay - so if one uses ADE2 to download, then Calibre and sideloads to Sony or Kobo does one need to upgrade their device firmware?

My guess is that the firmware upgrade is irrelevant - that is, whether one upgrades or not won"t matter because the upgrade peovides for ebooks to be read in DRM3 and earlier. Is that correct thinking?

Yes, it's only a very temporary solution.

I think I'll have to get used to getting Kobo's kepubs and figure out how to Alf them. And then I'll have the stupid header and footer that Metazoa's patcher got so beautifully rid of for regular epubs. Damn, my setup is near perfect right now - why do they have to go and screw it all up??!!

You could use your reader for DRM-free epubs, of course. But you won't be able to do the nice workflow of buying a DRMed epub, Alfing it and putting it on your reader (unless Alf keeps up with the changes...)

And of course any regular, non-MR customer will be totally screwed.

That's what I'm unclear about - if I continue to download into ADE2 and then Calibre and then sideload the DRM free then nothing will have changed from what I do now.

One could still sideload DRM2 books as well as DRMFree, of course.

But when downloading a *new* Adobe "protected" ebook, it will only come with DRM3, regardless of your reading platform(s).

As for old ones, I don't know what you'll get on subsequent re-downloading.

I thought that the DRM 2 or 3 version was determined by which version of ADE you downloaded into.

IF you downloaded into ADE2 then the book's DRM took on DRM2 features. But if you downloaded into ADE3 then the DRM took on the DRM3 features.

(Because I'm posting from my phone I'm not able to read the article)

That's apparently the case until July. After July, it looks like everybody gets forced to use the ADE3 DRM for new downloads.

All this is only going to work for a very limited time. The plan is to start enforcing the new DRM beginning in March and without exception from July 1st. I have no idea if they'll do this by forcing us to use ADE 3.0 or in some other way, but there will be only the new DRM from July on.
