Set in London at the time of the Gordon Riots of 1780, Barnaby Rudge interweaves a murder mystery with the story of Lord George Gordon's dangerous appeal to old religious prejudices against Roman Catholics. The brilliant descriptions of the destruction of Newgate prison by the rioters contain some of Dickens's most vivid writing.
This was Dickens' fifth published novel, published in 1841. Fully illustrated with 76 original black and white illustrations by George Cattermole and Phiz. Enjoy! EDIT: 9th Dec 2007 Improved layout and formatting. Uploaded v2. EDIT: 6 Jan 2008 Replaced words in capitals with italics, to match the printed book. Scanned and added the 76 original illustrations by George Cattermole and 'Phiz'. Uploaded v3. EDIT: 24 Mar 2010 Thoroughly proof-read the book against the "Oxford Illustrated Dickens" edition. Hundreds of errors corrected, and missing italics and other formatting restored. Added a cover image. The book is now is good shape; if you find any remaining errors, please let me know so that they can be corrected. Uploaded v5. Bought a few books from Waterstones for Sony Reader. Very disappointing formatting - not even justified. I just wanted to thank you both for the choice of quality books you have uploaded and particularly the wonderful formatting, particularly Barnaby Rudge. BTW, what font have you used?

It's just the default "Dutch801" serif font of the Reader. Glad to hear that you're enjoying it.

Strange, because it is different from the default font on my other books. It is darker for one thing, which is good. Maybe is is marginally smaller and you have spaced closer so it gives that effect - I will do some checking. Thanks.

It's darker because it's bold. The "BookDesigner" tool (which I use to create these books) uses the bold version of the Dutch font as its default paragraph font.

Just finished this book, a really great read. Thank you for uploading it, HarryT
![]() I thought the descriptions of the rioting fascinating (in a similar way to the French revolution violence in a Tale of Two Cities). The rest of the story was an excellent read too, with a few bits where I nearly laughed out loud (like Tappertit's plans for Miggs). Formatting was great, especially all the illustrations. Thanks again! |
