Creating cover image from first page of ebook
Hi there,
The "edit metadata window" has the nice function to generate a cover image from the first page of an ebook by pressing the corresponding button in the rigth upper corner of the window. When I use this function, the resulting cover image always has the size 1240 x 1752 px. Is there a way to change this size? So far, I couldn't find a way to change it. Just in case, if this is currently not possible: The "edit metadata window" has another function for generating a cover from template styles using the "Generate cover"-button. This function provides the option to set the resolution of the cover to be generated. So my suggestion would be to use the resolution set in this function when generating a cover from the first page of an epub. |

I believe the cover follows your selected Device Profile (tablet?)

Where can I find a general selection of a device profile?
I only know the device selection in the conversion settings. I played with several device input profiles and device output profiles in the conversion settings, but the respective resolutions of the device profiles where not picket up. |

But... Kovid just said in another thread that the smaller sizes are not used anymore. You might try using the Resize Cover Plugin to fix those large ones. That is another step or 2, but it only takes seconds to do. |

Long click the generate cover button you will get a menu where you can configure it, including the size.

Thanks for the info.
I assume that you refer to the menu of the "Generate cover"-button that allows you to set the style, color and size of the cover to be generated using pre-defined templates. The "Generate cover image from the first page"-button (in the right upper corner) does not seem to have such a menu. Unfortunately, the resolution set with the menu of the "Generate cover"-button does not seem to be used/picked up by the "Generate cover image from the first page"-function/button. This can be seen, for instance, by the fact that the "Generate cover"-button/function uses 1200 x 1600 px as default value, while the "Generate cover image from the first page"-function/button uses 1240 x 1752 px. Thats why I suggested in my first post using the size set with the menu of the "Generate cover"-button for generating a cover with the "Generate cover image from the first page"-function/button, if that's technically possible. |

An alternative approach: enhance the Generate Cover plugin ==>> Generate Cover

It seems that the automatic creation of cover images, which is applied when an ebook (epub) without a cover image is imported into calibre, also uses the size 1240 x 1752 px.
I like this function, but would welcome it, if the size of the automatically generated cover image could be adjusted. |

Have you looked to see if there's there's something in Preferences->Tweaks, try a search for 'cover'.

The size might depend on the version of calibre. I have some older ebooks with covers created with calibre that have a size that is smaller than the one I've mentioned above.
The size must have changed automatically since I didn't change the settings while upgrading the calibre versions. Last edited by mcdummy; 02-19-2025 at 07:03 AM. |

I could only find an option for setting a maximum size for covers saved in the library. However the size defined by this setting is different from the one used when creating a cover from the first page of an epub.

Just to avoid confusions with the various buttons:
The "Generate cover"-button (red box in figure below) has a menu for setting the size of a cover created from templates. "Generate cover image from the first page"-function/button (black box in figure below) does not seem to have such a setting and it is not picking up the size defined in the "Generate cover"-menu. |
