Calibre Slow and Non Responsive

Hello,
I recently had to restore my library. I currently have 152,222 books and running Calibre 7.26. I moved the location of my library to an external drive due to its size and now Calibre is extremely slow and non-responsive at times. Please advise how I might be able to speed up the responsiveness of the program.

Thank you.

Move it back to your original location. USB tends to be slower, especially USB2.0. Might have drive RPM to consider too.

In addition to using a USB3 drive, exclude that drive from Active A/V scans (leave the manual scan available)

Everything that hits that drive should have passed thru a folder that still has an active scan. eg Downloads

Which Operating System do you use, what type of interface is the external drive connected to, and how is it formatted? And, which calibre functions are unresponsive… e.g. starting, sorting searching, conversion, viewing, book editing etc?

I have a 1.3TB 150,000 'book' calibre library (video and audio clips) on an external USB 3.0 HDD drive, I can't discern any performance differential between it and my 4,000 book calibre 3.1GB library that sits on an internal SATA 3.x HDD drive… e.g. switching between them is sub 3 seconds either way.

For Old Curiosities sake I transferred my Books library onto my SDD, once again I couldn't discern any performance differential.

calibre is closer to Cairo than Giza.

Hello,
Thank you for your response. I just purchased a new computer windows 11, i7-14700 2.10ghz, with 16.0gb of ram installed. Everything runs great. My library was in the wrong place and running off the cloud. I moved it to an external drive and now when I search it freezes, when I sort it freezes. Any command causes it to freeze. Even adding books is slow. The external hard drive that it is on is a Western Digital drive. I have a Seagate 4TB I don't know the formatting sorry not very computer savvy. But, I learn well.

Question:
1; What type of drive do I purchase and move it to so that I don't run into any performance concerns?
2. How big should the storage be on the external drive?

I am so confused about this. Thank you for all of your help.

Which cloud was the library on?

To find out which File system the drive uses, start File Explorer for "This PC", right click the drive, and select Properties

Western Digital is fine, I won't use anything else, Seagate's OK too. And as big as you can afford.

If the drive is formatted for NTFS then that's what you want. If its something else then the question is why? Do you plan on attaching the drive to an Apple or Linux system?

I'm thinking it might be better to build a new library from the broken one. To test that proposition, create a new library, add some books to it and try sorting etc. Let us know how it performs. If its OK, then you can build a new library from the 'broken' one. If it's not… ????

NB: searching and sorting are 100% in-memory operations. Unless virtual memory gets involved the speed of the disk is near irrelevant.

What happens to calibre's speed if you copy the library tot he internal drive and access it from there?
