Jump back to KOReader after Power off

Hello everyone,

I've installed NickelMenu v0.5.4 and KOReader v2024.11 on my new Elipsa 2E with firmware 4.38.23171. Everything seems to be working fine.

When the device goes to sleep, I can jump back to KOReader immediately by pressing the Power button shortly. However, when the device is turned off, turning it back on again brings the system to "Home" tab of Nickel. I have to choose NickelMenu and then KOReader to get back to KOReader.

Is there anyway to jump back to KOReader and the book page that I was already reading after booting the device again?

I can't imagine it. Clue in the word "booting".

No, there isn't. Unlike sleep where KOReader and your Kobo's status are still loaded in memory, after a reboot KOReader is not loaded.

Thank you for confirming it. My other eReader does it and I kind of took it for granted. But now that I think about it, it's not that easy to do. It requires saving a "session" before powering down and restoring it after powering up.

I would think it wouldn't be that hard to do; just save the book id or whatever and the location/page you're on. Save it to a file on the reader. When booting, if that file exists use it to start the reader program and jump to the saved location.

On the other hand it might be a safety issue; imagine that a specific location in some book causes the reader software to freeze. At least then you could reboot and try again, only to have it freeze. But as it is now at least you have a way out by rebooting.

That "resume" file must be:

- Created when you power down
- KOReader actually should create it by intercepting the power down
- Deleted after a resume

Now, if KOReader is frozen, no interception, no creation.

Another approach would be to ask the user if they want to resume when such file exists. This whole resume "feature" can be guarded by a non-default option.

I have to say, I've never ended up in a frozen loop with my other device though.

You just haven't had a suitably bad ebook yet.

Not even on Windows, or any *inx (if you set to reload open windows on *inx)?

Turn off the setting that causes the Kobo to turn off if not used in so long. Just leave it to sleep.

That won't work. Sure KOReader could create a restore file (if programmed to do so), but Nickle (Kobo's software) will know nothing about it or how to use it.

I actually trigger the "power off" (by holding the power button) in order to save the battery.

What about Kfmon? I think koreader.sh already has an option to launch a book.

Indeed, I'm using NickelMenu. I'll give kfmon approach a try.

This is not saving you any battery if your reader is in airplane mode.

That doesn't save the battery unless you don't read for an extended period of time.

Don't use KFMon. If there is a problem launching KOReader, you get a nice brick. Just go to Nickel and use NickelMenu to start KOReader. It's the safest option.
