Do you find yourselves swapping genres regularly?
Do you swap genres regularly or (if you're not a genre reader) don't like to read many similar books successively?
This is something I don't remember from my younger years, but in the last decade or so I find myself getting bored with one genre after reading a few books in it and turning to another. For example, at the moment I've moved from thrillers/murder mysteries (Kay Scarpetta series and Murder Mindfully) to science fiction (Paradise-1 and its sequel Revenant-X); I'm not yet sure what will be next, but probably fantasy (continuing with Sanderson's Stormlight Archives); then again, maybe I'll still be in the SF mood and continue with Cherryh's Foreigner series. Or maybe it will be something else entirely. What about you? Do you get bored easily by the same genre/similar books? |

I do swap, although there are some genres I avoid. Although I still tend to favor SF and Fantasy.
When I was younger I was pretty much a SF and Fantasy only. |

Not genres per se, but I like to switch between heavy/serious literature and more light reading. I can generally read a lot of serious literature in a row, but not lighter stuff I've found.
I read a couple of books in the Rivers of London series and it got quite boring, so I switched to some essays by Chesterton (what a breath of fresh air!) and then other stuff. But that (RoL) series also suffers from the Terry Pratchett syndrome of trying too hard to be funny in some sort of English/British way. |

Yes, I swap genres. My go to is historical fiction, although I'm currently in a fantasy series. On occasion I'll do a sci fi. I've kind of gotten into the Reacher series, so action is a format I dabble in as well. I can read anything well written, but I stay away from mystery. Tried a noir crime book once, it was horrible.

Yes. I try to change genre every book. Sometimes this means I'm just alternating between SF and Fantasy, but I like to have a bit of a change. I think it helps the books stand apart.
It seems popular to binge a whole series in one go, these days, but I never do that. I usually leave at least 6 months between volumes. The exception can be if I've borrowed an omnibus from the library. |
