Ah, thanks. I haven't owned a Kindle or read on the app in more than 6 years, didn't realise the marketing integration was THAT incestuous.

One person's incestuous marketing integration is another's convenient feature.

Zero regrets.
I moved from Windows to Linux 18 years ago, but it had nothing to do with politics. I did it because I don't like monopolies (like Microsoft at the time).

As for GoodReads and StoryGraph (I didn't know SG existed) I'm not interested in either. I wasn't happy when GoodReads showed up on my Kindle and I couldn't get rid of it.

I just browse Goodreads for reviews. I don't use it - or anything similar - for my own reading.

For me to use a service it would have to be open source and my lists should be easily exportable. I wouldn't want to put in years of effort, only for the service to turn bad and then not being able to move my lists elsewhere.

There was a Mastodon instance created for this very purpose, but it didn't have any of my books on there. And I wasn't interested enough to find out how to add them, so I just went back to reading.

With me, it's the slow match of changes MS has been implementing. Ads and trackers in the OS, requirements for an online account. Other stuff I'm not thinking of right now.

Depending on what you're looking for, you might look into LibraryThing or BookWyrm. BookWyrm is to Goodreads as Mastodon is to Twitter.

The reason some left Goodreads is that they don't like Jeff Bezos' politics. That's the simple answer.

No books? StoryGraph has plenty of books.

SG also has the ability to make reading challenges. Much more customizable then GR. Some of us have been using the challenge with a MobileRead challenge. astrangerhere has been making the challenges.

I'm fairly sure the person you're quoting just doesn't know how to use the site.

If you are not logged in, there is a nice big button on right side at the top of the site that says Browse Books. That shows some books. How can he not know how to click that button?

It turns out, people can sometimes be pretty unaware of things that they don’t focus on. When I’m stressed out, sometimes it feels as I’m wearing blinders.
