I read all of FH's books, and tried a couple of those written since his passing, but I couldn't get past the inconsistencies which were introduced.
The first book definitely stands apart since it was heavily edited by John Campbell, and was pretty much directly copied from Lesley Blanch's _The Sabres of Paradise_ --- anyone who enjoyed the first book and is curious about the wellspring of it is encouraged to read that. I am in the middle of Butlerian Jihad, which is the second, chronologically, in Karellen's list that I'm using as a guide. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I like this so far. I had heard that the expanded universe books were terrible. Maybe they are and I have bad taste, but so far, with the first short story and this first book, I've been enjoying myself quite a bit with this. Thanks again, Karellen, for the list, it's helpful as I organize these stories and novels in Calibre.

![]() You are welcome. Went to buy the pbook a couple of days ago. Wanted to add it to my collection of Dune novels. Two bookstores - not available in Australia, no release date available!!! Really?!? Not going to capture the hype for the upcoming Dune movie?? |

Every time I see this, I wonder why it's not called Dune-iverse?

FWIW, I read the original Dune more than 50 years ago and have re-read it many times. I read the next two not that long thereafter and have not re-read them. I should do so at some point, but I have a lot of books on my to read list.
The first one is very deeply implanted, which makes the adaptations less enjoyable for me. Obsession with books and music from childhood seems a common phenomenon. |

I read the first Dune novel some 25 years ago and felt like meh. Not bad, but nothing personally outstanding for me either. Most characters were either boring or unpleasant, the Harkonnens seemed like caricatures of your generic TV villains and the good guys weren't any more exciting. Haven't read anything else in the universe and probably never will.
I did watch the two recent movies and they weren't bad, but again... nothing to write home about, for me. My sister loved the original novel, though. |
