Under the Midnight Sun by Keigo Higashino is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
From the acclaimed international bestseller Keigo Higashino (The Devotion of Suspect X) comes a sweeping novel in the tradition of Les Miserables and Crime and Punishment. This is the compelling story of a brutal crime and the two teenagers—Ryo, the son of the murdered man, and Yukiho, the daughter of the main suspect—whose lives remain inextricably linked over the twenty-year search for the truth behind the crime.

In Osaka in 1973, the body of a murdered man is found in an abandoned building. Investigating the crime, Detective SasagakI is unable to find the killer. Over the next twenty years, through the lens of a succession of characters, Higashino tells the story of two teens, Ryo and Yukiho, whose lives are most affected by the crime, and the obsessed detective, Sasagaki, who continues to investigate the murder, looking for the elusive truth.

Under the Midnight Sun is a complex, psychological novel about crime and its after-effects by one the most read and most accomplished contemporary mystery author. A twisting, compelling work that will astonish and delight Higashino’s old fans and new readers alike.

Quote:
You just boarded a flight to New York.

There are one hundred and forty-three other passengers onboard.

What you don’t know is that thirty minutes before the flight your pilot’s family was kidnapped.

For his family to live, everyone on your plane must die.

The only way the family will survive is if the pilot follows his orders and crashes the plane.

Enjoy the flight.

A Fine Dark Line by Joe R. Lansdale is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
13-year-old Stanley Mitchel Jr. spends most of his time helping his family run the town’s drive-in movie theater, reading ten-cent comics, and playing with his dog Nub. Life in East Texas circa 1958 is not very exciting until Stanley discovers a stash of old, crumbling love letters in a pile of burnt rubble behind the drive-in. As Stanley reads through the letters, he finds himself in the middle of a town mystery and discovering the secrets of his sleepy town. Stanley, with the help of the old projectionist and his older sister, uncovers the identities of the people who penned the letters and sheds light on a shocking 20 year-old murder plot. As Stanley unearths more and more truths, he realizes the injustices of life in East Texas in the 1950’s including class, race, gender, and the cruelty of unrequited love. Stanley feels betrayed by his family and his town as he takes a closer look at the dark truth and refuses to allow himself to succumb to the darkness.

When the wise woman Magda Digby is suspected of murder, Owen Archer sets out to prove her innocence in this intricately plotted medieval mystery.

May, 1375. Owen Archer returns from London to find York in chaos. While the citizens are living in terror of the pestilence which is spreading throughout the land, a new physician has arrived, whipping up fear and suspicion against traditional healers and midwives. With the backing of the new archbishop, he is especially hostile towards Magda Digby, the wise woman who has helped and healed the people of York for many years. At the same time, Magda is uneasy about the arrival of two long-lost kinsfolk. Though they say they are seeking her help, she senses a hidden agenda.

Magda’s troubles deepen when she discovers a body in the river near her home – and finds herself under suspicion of murder. Days later, fire rips through a warehouse in the city. Amongst the charred debris lies the body of a man – not burned, but stabbed in the back. Could there be a connection to the corpse in the river?

Determined to prove Magda’s innocence, Owen sets out to find answers – but the more he uncovers, the deeper the mystery becomes . . .

The Poisoning in the Pub is the tenth in the Fethering series by Simon Brett. It has dropped to £2.84 (weird price) at Kindle UK. I've read and liked a lot of the books in this series, but haven't read this one, so I'm happy...

Quote:
Welcome to Fethering! Carole and Jude spring into amateur detective action when their favourite pub is targeted by a killer in this quirky, cozy, British village mystery.

Jude and Carole get more than they bargained for when a lunchtime meal in their local pub leaves everyone with food poisoning. The landlord is horrified, and when a series of disasters start to befall his business it looks like it could be the end of the road for the Crown and Anchor.

Left with a bad taste in their mouths - and not just from the food - the two amateur detectives wonder if it might just be more than a run of bad luck that's forcing their favourite pub into bankruptcy.

When a young man is found in the kitchen of the pub, though, with a knife through his heart, Carole and Jude swing into action. There's a killer on the loose in Fethering, and Carole and Jude need to uncover who it is before it's last orders for the pub - and themselves.

That’s interesting - I’ve been reading through the series when I could find them on Libby and this was one of the few I couldn’t find. I eventually read it on a free Scribd trial.

I've been picking them up bit by bit, when they go on sale, which is not very often for most of them. At this point, the only one I need now (other than the two most recent, which is to be expected) is Guns in the Gallery. But it has taken a really really long time to pick them all up at prices I consider acceptable - and £2.84 for Poisoning almost didn't make the cut, but the dollar is pretty strong right now, so WTH.

Greeks Bearing Gifts is the next-to-last in the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr, at least by publication order, but it's the last chronologically because Metropolis is a prequel. (At least per SYKM - I haven't read Metropolis yet...) Greeks has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072L23VRT
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072L23VRT

Spoiler:
Quote:
'One of the greatest anti-heroes ever written' LEE CHILD

1957, Munich. Bernie Gunther's latest move in a string of varied careers sees him working for an insurance company. It makes a kind of sense: both cops and insurance companies have a vested interest in figuring out when people are lying to them, and Bernie has a lifetime of experience to call on.

Sent to Athens to investigate a claim from a fellow German for a sunken ship, Bernie takes an instant dislike to the claimant. When he discovers the ship in question once belonged to a Greek Jew deported to Auschwitz, he is convinced the sinking was no accident but an act of vengeance.

And so Bernie is once again drawn inexorably back to the dark history of the Second World War, and the deportation of the Jews of Salonika - now Thessaloniki. As Europe prepares to move on to a more united future with Germany as a partner rather than an enemy, at least one person in Greece is ready neither to forgive nor forget. And, deep down, Bernie thinks they may have a point.

A Man Lay Dead: During a country-house party between the two world wars, servants bustle, gin flows, and the host, Sir Hubert Handesley, has invented a new and especially exciting version of that beloved parlor entertainment, The Murder Game . . .

Enter a Murderer: A policeman in the audience sees an all-too-real death scene on a London stage in a mystery “good enough to satisfy the most critical reader of detective stories” (The New York Times).

The Nursing Home Murder: A Member of Parliament has unexpectedly died on a visit the hospital, and any number of people could be suspects, including a sour surgeon, a besotted nurse, a resentful wife, and a cabinet full of political rivals . . .

All four of Andrea Carter's Inishowen books are on sale right now in the US for $0.99 each, and they're discountable at Kobo US. I've read three of the four, and as I mentioned before, I liked the mysteries, but enjoyed the setting and sense of the remote Inishowen peninsula (Ireland) even more.
