Yes, see Fees for Personal Document Service. The fee is for delivery via Whispernet, and applies to MOBI files (e.g. from Calibre) even though they don't require conversion by Amazon.

Yes, anything you send via Whispernet is charged at $.15/megabyte (within the US) as described the Amazon site: Whispernet Service Options and International Fees.

avoiding kindle fees

I have avoided the kindle fees by plugging my kindle into the computer, highlighting the fetched files and sending them over to the kindle's main memory. Obviously, getting them over the air would be better but you would incur charges each time.

if you send them over the air to username@free.kindle.com what happens?

No, no no!
It ONLY costs $0.15, if you are using Kindle's whisper net. But, if you send ebooks to your Kindle device using WIFI, it is free.

How do make sure, that only WIFI connection will be used for sending ebooks to your Kindle?
With the email address username@free.kindle.com you can make sure that the ebook will only be sent using WIFI. The email address free.kindle.com will not send ebooks over Kindle whisper net. This way, you make sure to get the ebooks being delivered for free to your Kindle device.

With the email address @kindle.com (without "free") both Amazon Whispernet and WIFI will be used.

Thanks for this clarification. However, it does only apply with K3's (the original Kindle and K2 didn't have wifi connections).

no wi-fi on kindle dx

So if name@free.kindle.com only works to send calibre downloads to kindles for free via wi fi, I guess those of us with a dx are out of luck.

Any know workarounds so I don't hit the $.15 meter eight times a day?

I send many books free, mobi and pdf to my K3 via WiFi by sending them to my "free" kindle email (xxxx@free.kindle.com). They are delivered to my K3 automatically and without charge.

I have set up Calibre to do this automatically.

I just got my K3 last night, and successfully emailed a book, via an email.

How do you setup Calibre to do this automatically? I figured out how to do one at a time. Thanks.

That's actually incorrect. I have a K2 and it can utilize the @free.kindle.com address. Since there's no wifi, the converted documents are not delivered directly via wifi, however, you do receive an email with a link to the file that you can download to your computer and then transfer via USB. I do it all the time to avoid that Whispernet charge.

Don't the wi-fi/3G kindles always convert to Wi-Fi if it is available? I only have wi-fi, and I send tons of stuff to my kindle address (not free) and it comes right to my kindle. No charge. But you have to make sure it is done over wi-fi.

For good measure... just make sure your "Personal Document Charge Limit" is set to $0.00 on your Amazon Account page. If you have a K1 or K2, you may not get things delivered wirelessly, but you'll never screw up and get charged for a hundred docs that you accidentally sent to the wrong email address, either.

That's also true, however, it's not what the OP asked about .

They asked about documents being sent directly to their Kindle.

I just think it's important that older Kindle owners know that they can't have the documents sent to their device for free.

Just to clarify for my own sake, i have a question on this topic. I just started to download "lots" of news and magazine from Calibre and then email them over to my Kindle 3 using the @free.kindle.com. Since this is over WiFi, i know i won't be chanrged for the transfer. But will i be charged for the actual magazine or newspaper articles being downloaded, even though i got it through Calibre? I am under the assumption that news and magazine articles downloaded from Calibre are essentially free. Please correct me if this is a stupid assumption.

Thanks.

1) Calibre won't charge you. It can't.
2) Amazon/Kindle will only charge you under the circumstances set forth here (no charge if you use the @free address)
3) A web site can't charge you unless you give Calibre a username/password for a recipe fetching from that site. AFAIK, there are no passworded Calibre recipes that incur charges beyond a basic subscription fee, which you will already have paid outside of Calibre.

In theory, a website could charge you any fees you've agreed to pay, and in theory such fees could be per article, or per MB downloaded, or per access. However, as I said, I'm not aware of any Calibre recipes for sites that charge fees like that. You'd be more aware of it than anyone here when you signed up at such a site and when you gave a recipe your password for such a site. I suspect there are porn sites like that, or scientific article sites, or legal research sites that someone could write a recipe for, and if you gave that recipe a username/password, you'd get charged whatever fees you agreed to pay.
