Kindle3 3G for German in-laws living in Germany?

We're considering purchasing a Kindle3 3G for our German in-laws living in Frankfurt.

I understand that the German e-book selection is much more limited but they don't read English.

Any disadvantages? We will have a US credit card associated with the account and will probably manage the content ourselves (They are not very tech savvy)

To say that the selection of German books for the Kindle (on Amazon) is much more limited is still an understatement. At the moment there are maybe 5000 German books. Many of those are books who's copyright has run out.

I did a test with the paperback bestseller list from Spiegel. Out of 15 books none was available for the Kindle. Eleven of these 15 books are available as ebooks from German ebook stores.

There are rumors that Amazon will open a German Kindle store in 2011. When that happens, your wished use case might be possible (probably with a German credit card) . At the moment I would say, there are too many problems for it to work the way you want.

I don't think Kindle will be a good fit if they don't read english and are not tech savvy. German books will mostly be ePub format sometimes mobi (Kindle). If they can handle calibre it shouldn't matter as they can easily convert ePub (non-DRM) to mobi. Unfortunately most germany ePub books are protected by DRM when you buy them.

Therefore you should consider PRS-650 instead of Kindle 3. Or PRS-950 if they require Wifi for book downloads.

If most of the books that they will be reading are in EPub format then get an EPub device.
