I'm thinking Mechanique to be somewhat reminiscent of Angela Carter...

Juliet Marillier's newest series, Blackthorn & Grimot
The first 2 books in the Blackthorn & Grim series by fantasy writer Juliet Marillier (known for the Sevenwaters series and Wildwood Dancing) are discounted at Amazon US. Blackthorn & Grim is fantasy involving fairytales in Ireland with a bit of "solving magical mysteries" air, and the first book at least was quite good.
Dreamer's Pool (Blackthorn & Grim #1) $2.99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00INIJKKC/ Spoiler:
Tower of Thorns (Blackthorn & Grim #2) $5.99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00SI025PW/ Spoiler:

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a new StoryBundle:
The Escapist Bundle curated by one of the editors at WMG which produces the Fiction River anthologies contains a mix of backlist and new novels with the theme of escapism, which apparently works out to be mainly sfnal works (and one lone mystery/crime thriller). There's an anthology of pulp-styled stories, three collections of previously-published shorts by award-nominated authors Cat Rambo, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, and Canadian author Rebecca M. Senese, and several new-ish novels by established writers. And for fans of the BattleTech MilSF gaming franchise, Bundle of Holding is offering the RPG tabletop gamebooks for that. |

Beast Master’s Ark
Beast Master’s Ark by Andre Norton & Lyn McConchie, $0.99 at Amazon USA.
Apparently (from some of the reviews) not the best of the series, but it is the only one of the series I don't have, and I've never read it, even in dead tree version, so it was a no-brainer for me. 1 The Beast Master (1959) 2 Lord of Thunder (1962) 3 Beast Master's Ark (2002, with Lyn McConchie) 4 Beast Master's Circus (2004, with Lyn McConchie) 5 Beast Master's Quest (2006, with Lyn McConchie) In Beast Master and Lord of Thunder, Andre Norton created a memorable character, Hosteen Storm. A Native American soldier for Earth, he barely escaped his doomed home world when the Xic destroyed it. Armed with his soldier's skills, his ancestors' insights, and an uncanny ability to communicate mind-to-mind with animals, Storm is a hero unlike any other in science fiction. Now, science fiction Grand Master Andre Norton has teamed up with Lyn McConchie to pit Storm against his most dangerous enemy yet: Death-which-Comes-in-the-Night. It is silent. It leaves no tracks. The only evidence that remains is the perfectly cleaned bones of its victims. And it has developed a taste for humans. No one has survived an attack yet, and the natives of Storm's adopted planet, Arzor, are moving in on human territory as they try to escape the silent scourge. The already high tensions between Humans and Natives soar, sparking a race against time as Storm attempts to solve the mystery of Death-which-comes-in-the-Night before Humans and Natives clash. But he can't do it without help from Tani, a genetic engineer from the Ark, a ship traveling space with genetic material from across the galaxy, including the destroyed Earth. But Tani has been poisoned against Beast Masters by her mother. She must conquer her own unreasoning hatred, and awaken the powerful Beast Master in herself, before she and Storm can conquer Death-which-Comes-in-the-Night and uncover the great conspiracy that threatens not only Arzor, but all human-occupied planets. |
