Can I get newsfeed directly on Kindle?

I might have some problems stating this correctly as I am new to this, but I have found that Calibre can be used to get download news feeds which I can then add to a Kindle. Is there some way I can get the Kindle to do so directly?

The reason I ask is that my computer is still stuck with dial up and part of the value of the Kindle is 3G access.

Google Reader is good to leverage for this purpose. For example:

You can use the browser to read your Google Reader feeds directly with 'G:RSS-Web'. It works pretty well, given the limitations of the browser (can't open a new browser window).

One of the calibre recipes is for Google Reader as well if you prefer to do your reading off line, but of course that would have to be done over your dialup line (but you could schedule it to happen while you do something else).

And I believe there's a hack for the browser issue (see Kindle Developer threads), but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Thanks. Kindlefeeder looks great. However they have no way to get the feeds to my Kindle without an additional Amazon charge. They say this is possible, but they won't send the .AZW files to my regular email, just right back to @free.kindle.com which makes no sense as:
1. They don't need conversion.
2. I cannot get the files back from Amazon when they go to @free.kindle.com.

Maybe their premium service will do some good.

I'll keep trying, thanks. I'm not sure what Google reader does, but I'll give it a try.

I'm not sure what you're getting at... I have Instapaper deliver content to my @free.kindle.com address without any problems.

The delivery to the email is not the problem. Because I can't download the content through WiFi, they charge to access it with 3G. I am just trying to get the feed from Kindlefeeder without an additional cost.

If you use the 3G service for personal documents, there will be a charge, period. It's not a lot of money, though. Depends on how bad you want it to arrive "automagically".

If you do manual delivery, it's free.

Could you give me an idea of how to do "manual delivery"? Thanks

By manual, I mean through the free.kindle.com email conversion, or converting on your pc with one of the easily available tools (like Calibre or Mobipocket Creator).

When you email to free.kindle.com, and don't have wi-fi, you get a link to a file in your email, that you can download and copy to the Kindle via USB.

So, I would go to the email with 3G and then not download the file that way but copy the link provided, enter it in my computer, and download the files that way? Or is there some way to access free.kindle.com on my computer?

I asked Amazon's Kindle people about this and they had no clue, so your help is greatly appreciated.

OK, so let's see if I understand.
You do not have access to a wifi connection, correct?
The only way for you to download newsfeeds is by connecting to 3G, but you would prefer to not pay for the "personal document" download service, correct?
Sending files to @free.kindle.com will allow you to avoid paying any fees, but then you end up back at the no wifi problem, correct?

I see three options for downloading newsfeeds while on the go:
A. Find a coffee shop or library or whatever that has free public wifi and do your downloading there.
B. Pay the fee for 3G downloading "personal documents"
C. Use the Kindle's browser and 3G connection to access an online newsfeed reader such as Google Reader (you can get to a kindle friendly version by going to m.google.com).

If on-the-go downloads are not important, then you also have the option of transferring files from your computer to your Kindle via the USB cable.

D. If you have a smartphone you might be able to use it as a WiFi hotspot. Then you can download content using the @free address, without any charges. Most Androids and (I think) iPhone support tethering.

Thanks for all the help here. I have figured out what I can do. The problem was with Kindlefeeder and Amazon both neglecting to tell me that when Kindlefeeder sends an .AWZ file to free.kindle.com, where I can't get it without paying a fee, they also send me a regular email with the link to a source that will download the files to my computer.

Kindlefeeder assumes that you already know this will happen, and Amazon tech support didn't know this was happening when I asked them. I tripped across this in one of their web pages and it was mentioned as an afterthought.

Hi Chas,

Tomsem mentioned G:RSS-Web (http://nowsci.com/grss-web/) above, does this not suite your needs? It allows direct access over 3G with formatting for the Kindle, and auto-syncs to your Google Account for when you read through Google.com/reader on your PC. Btw, if there is anything that needs to be enhanced with it that doesn't work for you, let me know.

Thanks very much for your feedback. Quite honestly, I looked at the site and I couldn't figure out what it did, so I didn't dig any deeper. Not being a smart phone user, I am sure there are things I just miss.

As I look now, it looks like a better option than I had so I will give it a try. Thanks again, I would have missed this.
