They do have quite a lot of talent in the team. I still remember seeing some belgian players in the world cup that i liked, Scifo, Ceulemans and that monster of a goalkeeper Preud'Homme. I had to opportunity to see him lots of times, since he played in Portugal for a long time, although in a rival club ehehehe

^Yep, no host team has lost the opening match. Flash to Canada if they host in 2026 (haha).
1-1 and Croatia scored the first goal. |

Can I change my prediction? Apparently, it is a penalty offence to stand close to a Brazilian player in the box. If that's the way Brazil games are going to be refereed then they cannot lose.

^Haha. The official probably felt bad giving Neymar a yellow in the first half given that fouls were 8-1 or something at that point.

Yeah, that penalty call was a bit ridiculous...

Looks like the 3 v 1 prediction you made is going to be right though!

The result could have swung either way in the last minute. Can't fault the game for not having some drama at the end.

So, 3 - 1 to Brazil. Personally, if I was Brazilian I'd be embarrassed that it took a blatantly corrupt referee to get us past a second rate team.

I should have placed a bet
Very very frustrating for Croatia. That penalty kick was instrumental for Brazil. The referee was too afraid to spoil the party... |

In one match affairs, it is never a given when you play anyone ranked in the top twentyish teams in the world.
Brazil owned possession, owned the fouls, owned the shots and chances. They played well, finishing not so well. Yes, they got a cheap call for the penalty goal. They got a couple of yellows that could cost them later on. Croatia is always a fiesty bunch and this played out pretty much how I figured with a physical game. Not having their best striker was certainly a problem, but they were close to the upset. |

I sincerely hope this isn't an omen of how the tournament will be this time; the team with the best play actors wins if it is and that's just the death knell for football as as sport.

Good. People remember the great Brazilian teams of previous World Cups because of the football they played. Does Fred really believe that he'll be remembered in years to come because of a great dive? He should be ashamed.

i think you both are right.
It was a weird game, because for 75 minutes or so, Brazil did pressed Croatia and created more danger around the goal, but even so, the referee did influence a lot the outcome. I am not sure if they would have hold on the 1-1 during the whole second half but opening the way for the victory as the referee did certainly leaves no room for doutbs. |
