Whoever is running Smashwords seems to have no idea how to deal with fraudulent eBooks. So how can we trust that what we are buying is legal?

Finding fraudulent eBooks isn't Smashwords responsibility. The copyright holder is responsible for reporting fraudulent eBooks to Smashwords. If Smashwords then doesn't do anything, then they become responsible.

But it's been reported and Smashwords still hasn't done anything. It's been reported a number of times by many people and still nothing.

Really only action by the copyright holder, either her estate or Harper counts. Fortunately, or else there could be more fraudulent take-downs than there are. It's baffling that the right holders have done nothing.

As was said earlier in this thread, the publisher has sad that there are no rights in the US. I do not know everywhere the series is legally allowed to be sold, but I do know it's legal in the UK?

Nikkie came here for input to improve their platform not to catch grief for something she isn't able to change since she doesn't work in that area. She has already responded that, contrary to the statements above, they did get proof that the publisher does have the proper rights.

I appreciate the zeal for this but, please!, give it a rest or take it to a thread that's supposed to be for this instead of side tracking this one. At this point, it is up to the actual rights holder or the author to continue to fight this. You've done what you can. Can we get back to the original topic please? |

Only the copyright holder can issue a take down notice. At best, if you notify Smashwords that you think one of the books isn't a legal version, they contact the publisher or copyright holder. Most of the time, they don't do anything since usually they don't have to resources to chase down the copyright holder and ask. If it bothers you that a book you think isn't legal is in a book store, then the best thing to do is contact the copyright holder or his or her agent and report it. I've done that before. If the author is dead, it can be a lot of work.

Would it be possible to have more sub-categories in a main category? Or would that be too much work? Especially as authors have to contribute the category info — and some will cheat.
But it can be frustrating if you have a hankering for something specific but can’t find it through a search. For example, what if I want to find pulp reprints? Or New Pulp? Or relic hunter adventures? The best way at this time would be to know the name of an author or publisher ahead of time rather than going by category. For example, Adventure has six sub-categories: Action, General, Men’s Adventure, Sea adventure, Travel, and War & Military. The types of books I want could be in several of those categories. |

And on top (bottom?) of that last post... How can a field like Horror have only six sub-categories?
![]() What about adding some more? For example, Creatures, Extreme horror, Quiet horror, etc. |
