So in another thread a librarian has been reported as saying libraries pay Overdrive $90 for an audio book (to be renewed yearly?). So if 100 people listen to the book during the year, you might say the author group (author, narrator, publisher, etc) made .90 per listen. Or if 200 people check the book out, it gets reduced to .45 per listen.

So in this example, the author group can actually make MORE via Audible Romance Package listens, for popular books, than they do from library borrows. (And Audible Romance Package books are borrows, not purchases).

I'm sure romance listens are different, but 100 borrows a year for an audiobook strike me as very rapid turnover and 200 flatly impossible. Both scenarios require short books and aggressive turnover and even so. Some of the books on my wishlist show up as available in the Audible Romance Package, but they're Victorian novels and run about 20 hours, more or less. When borrowed from OverDrive, I would imagine they take pretty much the entire borrowing period.

A 20 hour book is only 3 hours a day. One week. I do that all the time. All my audio book library check outs are set for 7 days.

That's only 50 checkouts per year and not 100 or 200. Also, while I have no idea what's typical, three hours a day would be a lot of listening for me. A 20-hour book can take me three weeks and that's still an hour a day.

Is that 50 check outs per person per year? A number which could be multiplied by other users? Or per title?

I'm listening a lot less since I got a job, and MIL arrived. I gotta get those earbuds in more often!

So...my daughter says I should drop boring books like that! (She heard me complain when something happened that was SO predictable). I'm sure she's right. When I finished that book I started The Darkest Warrior by Gena Showalter. I don't want to miss a WORD of this one!

It is per checkout per title. Popular books may have several copies purchased by the library but generally only 1 can be checked out at a time.

Do you mean that each copy can have only 1 borrower at a time? Meaning that the $90 purchase price (per year) can have only 52 borrowers per year. And only if all borrowers are FAST listeners, and finish the book in a week.

More copies of the book will allow more borrowers, but it also add more multiples of the $90 yearly cost.

I assume.

Exactly. They treat electronics copies just like hard copies. Only one checkout at a time per copy.

I think that additional copies of the same book may be discounted.
