Arnim, Elizabeth von: Fräulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther. v1 30 May 2017

Mary Annette Beachamp was born in 1866, in Australia, to an English father and an Australian mother. She was taken by her parents to England when she was three, and spent the rest of her life in England, Germany, other parts of Europe, and the USA where she died in 1941. She married Count Henning von Arnim-Schlagenthin in 1890, and had four daughters and one son with him. They separated in 1908, and he died in 1910. She married Lord Francis Russell in 1916, but left him in 1919.

Until the 1980s her twenty or so books were attributed to 'The Author of Elizabeth and her German Garden' or to 'Elizabeth'. She was eventually known to her family and friends as 'Elizabeth', and signed her personal letters as 'e.'

Early in 1906 Elizabeth passed herself off as a governess in in the household of a professor in Jena. She worked as a menial servant for several weeks before having to return home because the 20 year old son of the household had fallen in love with her.

Fräulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther was published in 1907. It consists of 81 letters from a poor lower class German woman to a poor aristocratic Englishman who had studied with her father. They had fallen in love, and just before he returned to England had agreed to marry, though this was to be kept secret.

The text was taken from online-literature.com, and checked against the 1907 Smith, Elder & Co edition. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics and diacritics, used British English, made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com, and provided translations as annotations.
