Device: Kobo Touch
tablet with glare guard vs eink reader

I've got a Kobo Touch and it's been pretty glitchy over the past few months (completely freezes when the battery gets down to about 60%, freezes a lot during page turns, etc). I want to get a new ereader that is going to last a while.

I was totally against using a tablet as an ereader but I was reading more about them last night. I looked into glare guards and found the Moshi iVisor. It seems pretty good, looks more heavy duty than the plastic ones you stick on the screen but I didn't see reviews specifically about reading with it. Any tablet users have some insight?

Alternatively, are there any really good quality eink devices out there? From what I've seen they're all pretty similar when it comes to actual device quality. I don't really need a lot of features. I rarely if ever use wifi, don't need a light, being able to read PDFs well is good but it's not a dealbreaker. I definitely want a device that reads ePubs. If I lived in the US I'd consider trying the Kindle Paper White and getting Amazon Prime for the lending library, but we don't have that in Canada.

I've been really happy overall with my Sony 650. The build quality is solid, with the aluminum shell, I've only had the occasional freeze (two or three times in almost 3 years). I'm considering upgrading to the new Kobo Aura, for the slightly bigger screen and the front light. I'd say that a used 650 in good condition would meet your needs pretty well. I can't say anything about Sony's newer models, since I've never tried them.

Good anti-glare screen protector on lcd tablet is usually enough for pleasant reading in lighted or dark room (with lowered screen brightness) but not good enough for pleasant reading in the sun.

Some sunshade is also needed.

It is not difficult to make some DIY cardboard sunshade for reading around the house.

If you need good pdf and epub, mobi, djvu, cbz e-ink reader without light, you can buy used Kindle Dx and just install KPV KindlePdfViewer thereon.

The problem with reading a tablet in the sun isn't glare. It's that the sun is so much brighter than your tablet's LCD that it completely washes it out. An LCD - like my mistress's eyes - will never be as bright as the sun.

I've tried just about every gadget and no-glare screen on my phone and out in the sunlight, it's just about useless. I need to set menus so I know where things are without having to "see" the screen, and I set specific ringtones for people I know always since I can't even tell who's calling from the screen while outside.

I don't think you're going to have any luck reading in the sun on a tablet no matter what you try. If you get to the point of managing it, I don't think the reading will be that enjoyable since it will be still very difficult to read.
