Got it.

That would be from this quote:

"Deacon Williams’ corpse hung upside down from the limb of a gnarled juniper tree, his throat ripped out. Murder: brutal, vicious, inhuman… the work of a mad dog, a wolf, a monster. Was the legend of the Fletcherville Werewolf a reality? By the time whatever it was had killed again, and a beautiful girl had disappeared, Philip St. George decided to intervene. There was work once more for… the Satan Sleuth."

Stumbled upon a little self-published collection of short stories that is free today. I read a couple of the stories and the introduction. I enjoyed both of the stories, and the author and I seem to have a lot in common, so I imagine I'll enjoy the rest of the book.

Even Closer Than the Sea and Other Stories: Strange Tales of Mystery, Horror and Science Fiction
https://www.amazon.com/Even-Closer-T...dp/B01I8E8CEK/

I think it's free today only. Covers a few genres, hopefully a cross-posting is ok.

A number of backlist horror titles reprinted by Severn Press are on sale for just $2.99 at the moment (couponable at Kobo, prices available in the usual other stores and in Canada, the US, and possibly also the UK), presumably just until the end of Hallowe'en :
  • His Vampyrrhic Bride & Secrets of the Dead by British Fantasy Award-winning author Simon Clack. HVB is 4th in the Vampyrrhic series for which we've previously received the 2nd as a freebie from Endeavour's Venture imprint; SotD is a standalone involving mummies.
  • Community by Graham Masterton, who IIRC is a Stoker Award winner.
  • Zone by Jack Lance, a paranormal thriller apparently along the lines of Stephen King's story The Langoliers, involving a passenger plane vanished into strange and disturbing flight paths. Also Pyrophobia, involving a man who one day finds out that his life is not at all what he thought it was, and goes in search of his own grave.
  • Property of a Lady by Sarah Rayne, 1st in the Nell West and Michael Flint Haunted House Story series, apparently a mystery/horror hybrid which involves the sleuths investigating murderously haunted houses.

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a new StoryBundle offering:

Military Horror Bundle curated by small publisher Cohesion Press contains both science fiction and fantasy tales of soldiers fighting monsters ranging from mythological to futuristic, and the classic zombies and werewolves and vampires, oh my!

(We don't seem to have a dedicated 2017 megathread?)

Anyway, x-link to the DRM-free thread for a Humble Bundle offering which may be of interest:

Humble Bundle Fantastic Fiction presented by Subterranean Press from the sfnal specialty small publisher contains only two dedicated horror works, by award-winners Clive Barker and Robert McCammon, both at the $15 top-tier, but may be well worth it if you also read other sf/fantasy. And there are also collections and novellas by other authors who work with dark fantasy/weird fiction themes, such as Tim Powers and Joe R. Lansdale and Cherie Priest (a novella in her steampunk zombies series) and Richard Chizmar, and from the blurb, the Mira Grant story sounds pretty horror-ish.

Looks like we're missing a dedicated 2017 thread for all things spooky and uuurggh!!!

Anyway, I've just noticed that all three novels in Michael Avallone's Satan Sleuth series from the 1970s are currently going free at Amazon UK. The middle one is a repeat from sometime last year.

#1: Fallen Angel

Quote:
"From the single, indelible, for-all-of-his-lifetime moment that he stared down at what was left of Dorothea, no more than a lumpy mass which a bucket could hold all too easily, he was transformed into something else. Something not quite human or real."

Ritual murder! They had come upon her in the dead of night, and when it was all over Dorothea St. George was dead. The beautiful actress wife of millionaire playboy Philip St. George had been violated, mutilated and dismembered by a Manson-like cult of Satan worshippers. For months St. George mourned… and then he emerged, a man with a mission: to avenge Dorothea’s death and to save others who, like her, were fated to be sacrificed to the Devil himself. He became the Satan Sleuth.
#2: The Werewolf Walks Tonight

Quote:
“Fletcherville seems to have a wolfman, Sidney. A wolfman who’s already killed four people. And there’s a young girl who’s disappeared. She may be dead by now. In any case, Fletcherville is calling. For me.” Philip St. George, The Satan Sleuth

Deacon Williams’ corpse hung upside down from the limb of a gnarled juniper tree, his throat ripped out. Murder: brutal, vicious, inhuman… the work of a mad dog, a wolf, a monster. Was the legend of the Fletcherville Werewolf a reality? By the time whatever it was had killed again, and a beautiful girl had disappeared, Philip St. George decided to intervene. There was work once more for… the Satan Sleuth.
#3: Devil, Devil

Quote:
“Who breaks the chain, who disrupts the glory of the circle, must be punished. One who accepts our hand in the Ritual of the Ring and does not truly believe -- that one must die.” -- Sister Sorrow

Black Mass in Manhattan: thirteen naked figures writhed on the penthouse roof in the pale moonlight. It’s a coven in the heart of New York City, practicing the rites of the Devil. Sister Sorrow, the Bride of Lucifer, led them. Her hypnotic eyes were luminous in the deadly night: black eyes that could change man into beast and command her subjects to commit murder. Five beautiful young girls had met death at her behest. Five beheaded corpses, their bodies scarred with demonic markings. Philip St. George vowed there would be no more. Sister Sorrow would meet her match in the Satan Sleuth.

Iirc, they removed the '2016' from last year's thread and it had a couple bumps this year.

Only the sticky threads had an annual reset this year. I've merged 2017 into 2016 and changed the thread title to follow form for the unstuck genre threads.

I can't figure out of Satan Sleuth is stupid or awesome. At any rate, the price is right.

Here's the link for the Amazon US listing.

Lovecraft Country

I'm not sure how long this is on sale, but Matthew Ruff's Lovecraft Country is currently $1.99 at Amazon, Kobo, and B&N.

The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy.

Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.

At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.

A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of two black families, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.
