Dark rituals drag London mage Alex Verus into the center of a conspiracy in this thrilling novel from the national bestselling author of Marked.

Since his second sight made him infamous for defeating powerful dark mages, Alex Verus has been keeping his head down. But now he's discovered the resurgence of a forbidden ritual. Someone is harvesting the life-force of magical creatures—destroying them in the process. And draining humans is next on the agenda.

Hired to investigate, Alex discovers not everyone on the Council wants him delving any deeper. Struggling to distinguish ally from enemy, he finds himself the target of those who would risk their own sanity for power. Alex still has the advantage of seeing the future—but he might not have a future for much longer.
Hmm... this is book 2. Was book 1 on sale recently and I missed it?

I got book 1 when it was on sale back in 2015 and was mentioned here on mobileread by someone else. I liked it enough that I bought book 2 and 3 but have not continued since then (too many other books to read first).
It has been compared to the Dresden series but involves a mage in alternative London, if you enjoy urban fantasy this is worth trying. As it has been awhile since I read them I can't remember if book 2 stands alone but I think it would be better to read book 1 first

I have (had) a long-running subscription to Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine at Amazon. It was charged at £0.99 per month, and the issues came out bimonthly, so £1.98 each.

In February, I noticed that instead of £0.99 I'd been charged £29.99. I got Amazon to call me, and they couldn't explain what had happened, but reversed the charge.

In March I forgot to check, but I've checked now and in March I was charged £29.99 and in April £28.99.

I have now cancelled the subscription. Amazon are refunding me.

Looking at the current page, it seems that the magazine is now only available as a yearly subscription of £29.99. That's over £4.99 an issue - too much for me.

But if you have a long-term F&SF subscription, do check how much you've been charged this year!
Sneaky buggers! I don't have a subscription but thanks for letting people know.

I suspect it's a mistake rather than intentional.

I did sent F&SF a letter directly and got a response that they're looking into it. Amazon have refunded the excess fees.

Autonomous by Annalee Newitz

Autonomous by Annalee Newitz is $2.99 on Amazon and other stores (for several days now).
Quote:
When anything can be owned, how can we be free

Earth, 2144. Jack is an anti-patent scientist turned drug pirate, traversing the world in a submarine as a pharmaceutical Robin Hood, fabricating cheap scrips for poor people who can’t otherwise afford them. But her latest drug hack has left a trail of lethal overdoses as people become addicted to their work, doing repetitive tasks until they become unsafe or insane.

Hot on her trail, an unlikely pair: Eliasz, a brooding military agent, and his robotic partner, Paladin. As they race to stop information about the sinister origins of Jack’s drug from getting out, they begin to form an uncommonly close bond that neither of them fully understand.

And underlying it all is one fundamental question: Is freedom possible in a culture where everything, even people, can be owned?
