I needed to do a factory reset on my Clara HD. While playing around, I switched languages several times and the Automatically share data about the features you use was present in all languages I tried. I tried bypassing registration and no difference. I never saw a visit the Kobo privacy page notice so I would love to find out exactly what @Pam R has done in her setup to trigger this.

It could be based on the affiliate. These are national so the rules for what can be done would change.

Have you turned on Parental controls? This changes the available options. On my Aura H2O, The data sharing option is disable, but, still there. There might be some other combination of options that interact with this in not that obvious ways. Could you post a screenshot of the settings page? Seeing it might trigger something.

And to check, have you actually registered the device using an account? Or have you bypassed the registration by editing the database?

Other than that, the things I would look at doing are:

• Manually reinstall the current firmware. That is just in case something went wrong with the update and it was incomplete in some way.
• Delete the config file and let it be recreated.
• Sign out of the account and back in. But, before doing this, take a copy of books partition. If this doesn't help, you can restore the copy later.
• A full factory reset. Not the on from the information page, but from the Developers options or manually. These wipe the root partition as well as the books partition.

So would I!! The only thing I can think if is that the first attempt at the last firmware update failed due to loss of connection then succeeded on the second attempt (apparently). Can someone tell me how to take a screen shot of the settings on my reader, please?

Big thanks to everyone who has come up with ideas but I am not very technical and some of the suggestions are a little beyond what I feel comfortable trying. Do you think that when the next firmware update arrives it may solve the problem?

At the moment I have decided I will get by just logging out of my account with Kobo then logging back in again. That clears the activity count. Must admit I only use it to see how much battery life I am getting.

In the "FeatureSettings" of the config file add the line:

Screenshots=true

The use the powerbutton to take the screenshot. The image is saved in the root directory of the device.

To turn it off, remove the line or change the value to "false".

I'm pretty sure this message is referring to the enhanced privacy options added in 15190 which are available via a server-side switch (I'm not sure what the conditions are, but I think I remember seeing something about California or something like that). This will show up as kobo_privacyCentre_url in the config file. Theoretically, there are individual options for crash logging, analytics, stats, and recommendations.

Sorry for the long silence, but I am not technically up to doing what some of you tried to help with. However, I have installed the latest update today, which went ok but still have to same entry on page 2 of Energy saving and privacy -

"To access your privacy settings, please visit https://www.kobo.com/privacy

I can't believe that fact that the kobo is not registered with Adobe Digital editions has anything to do with it.

I've given up worrying about it to be honest as everything else works ok

If what @geek1011 said is correct, the option is dependent on where you are.

Kobo could be using IP address based geolocation to work out that you are in an area that requires handling the privacy options differently. Hence the URL instead of the options. If that is the case, you would need to use a VPN to give you an IP address in a different location that isn't using those rules.

Or, it could be based on the address you have in your Kobo account. If you change that address to somewhere else, the country or the state will need to be changed. Kobo do not validate the address other than it looks valid for the country selected and the postcode/zipcode is valid. But, this can affect the books available to purchase and possibly ithe tax rules used. There are legal or ethical issues, such as it will break your agreement with Kobo, but that is for you to decide on.

It would be good to have an option to reset the reading stats. I have considered doing this at the start of the year as a way to see what I do. But, I never remember until after I finish my first book for the year. As this is something you want to do, you should tell Kobo so that they know people are interested.

I can create a patch or a one-time NickelHook mod (depending on what you're more comfortable with) to give you the old privacy settings if you want.
