Free (Kindle) 4+ Vook history, self-help, etc. [Assorted Non-Fiction]
Well, it looks like those short freebies from Charles River Editors, a.k.a. the "Vook" virtual textbook people, are beginning to be offered again in the Kindle store.
Currently there's 4 shown up so far. I don't know if that's it for the current batch, or more are slated to trickle in later, but here's a search link which should pull them up by publisher and show only the genuinely free ones. It turns out they're geo-restricted to the US, which is why my original search failed when I copy-pasted it to another browser to check. In case any show up in other regions, here's a keyword search on the publisher sorted low-to-high. Watch out, since there are some which are only "free" if you use one of the Amazon Prime monthly lends on it. Last edited by ATDrake; 12-25-2011 at 06:14 AM. Reason: I wasted 13 minutes of my life trying to figure this out. Those Vook things had better be worth it. |

New batch of 9 of these things (assorted history bios and business/self-help) and US-only, as far as I can tell.
If the OP links give you non-working results, here's a properly-constructed one which should grab just the genuine freebies which I tested in a browser set to the US Kindle store: Linkage for the lot. |

Another batch of these, some also available outside the US, so here's an Amazon UK auto-search link for them as well.

A new batch of these things, with several available to Canadians (and presumably elsewhere) and a great many US-only. A mix of various career advice and illustrated classics.

A new batch of these things, with at least a dozen being listed as available to Canadians and the UK, and there may be some more geo-restricted to US-only.
Same linkage as above. |

Does anyone know, or have an opinion, on how authoratative these books are? For example there are two biographies today on George Washington and Ben Franklin. I don't know much past the obvious about either of them and have no desire to do any in depth study of them, but I thought it might be useful to have a quick reference available if a question came up - e.g. a book in which the British won the war of independence .
It would be useful to have some idea about how accurate they might be but they don't seem to give any credentials for the authors. |

There's a short "Select Bibliography" of sources consulted in the back which are the sort of typical general field history/personal biography kind of thing that people would pull of the library shelves for a general research project.
I've skimmed a few of these, and for the subjects I had any acquaintance with, the basic facts seemed to be in place and reasonably accurate for the "light overview" style they seemed to be going for. Frankly, you'd probably get more in-depth (and better cited) write-ups going direct to Wikipedia, but for a portable light introduction to the known life facts and important professional accomplishments of the subjects, these seem pretty decent and have some nice pictures included as well. |

Thanks. That will probably do the trick for the use I'm likely to have for them. If all else fails it sounds as though I can at least enjoy the pictures.

A new batch of quite a lot of these things (20 available to Canadians). Some are repeats, but several interesting-looking new ones including one about space exploration.
Links in posts #2 and #3 will turn up the proper results in the main & UK stores, respectively. |
