Tolino Vision 6: problem with transfering books to device (books get deleted)

In May I posted here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=347067 and asked about books getting deleted after getting the error that "Error communicating with device"

Since my last post, I have just reset the device, and it also installed the newest update 15.4 from a few days ago.

However, the errors are the same:
Spoiler:
calibre, version 6.4.0

What's perplexing is that once I've unplugged and reconnected the device, Calibre tells me that these books are on the device if I go to the Device view. But if I go to my library those same books don't have the checkmark in the "On Device" column.

To recap the problem. I hit "Send to Device". It transfers several, sometimes dozens of books, no problem. Then a random book gives it trouble, and I get above error. I unplug and reconnect the device and many of the previously successfully transferred books are now showing as NOT on the device, once again.

So the process of transferring books is quite tedious since I keep having to do the same books over and over till at some point it takes.

Any ideas on what to do? I just reset the device, as in an hour ago, and this still happens.

Oh, and sometimes books get deleted on reconnecting, it seems. Are there any new solutions since I last posted?

Thanks!

PTP (USB mode) means Picture transfer Protocol
You really should use MTP (media transfer Protocol) or File Transfer mode

Can you set the USB port mode on the Tolino?

I don't think so? I'm on Linux Mint, if that makes a difference, but I'm pretty sure I didn't select PTP mode. How would I change this?

Also, as far as I can tell, there aren't any options on the device to change this

The Device, not the host.
The device negotiates the connection.

Can Mint (Calibre not STARTED/running) file manager even see the Tolino?

Yes, it can, though I have to unmount the device from the file manager so that Calibre can detect it.

With the Mint file manager can also manually see and edit the folder structure.

Does that help?

If using Mate desktop on Mint open "System Monitor" and Stop (not end or kill) the "gvfs mtp volume monitor" process on Linux before USB connection. On Cinnamon there is a setting that works to disable automount, it's ignored on Mate / Caja.

The MTP setting is on the Tolino somewhere. The Android device decides, never the host desktop.

I'm on Cinnamon, and it's already set not to automount.

Do I need to install something on the host desktop to enable MTP? I ask because I'm not sure I have that, and even though the Tolino decides, wouldn't both sides need to be able to use the protocol?

The paths in those error messages are a mess of unicode Left to right and right to left marks. Why is that? What are the device configuration settings in calibre? Right click the device icon to see the configuration.

the bunch of unicode order marks is coming from the device firmware, so nothing calibre can do there. It just looks like buggy firmware to me.

OK, I'm guessing I can't change this either? I've looked online and the device's settings, but can't find anything whatsoever about changing the device name. I've also reset the device (a few days ago) but this was already an issue before that. And it also just updated the firmware.

So, can I change this? And is this the underlying issue, e.g. is calibre confused by the really long name or something like that?

You said its an intermittent issue. Intermittent issues are almost always hardware related. The error you posted is not calibre getting confused, its the device failign to accept transmission of a file. I was just wondering where that weird name came from as it could be indicative of other problems. calibre doesnt care what the device is named.
