Exclamation Free (Kindle KDP) The White Dragon by Laura Resnick [Epic High Fantasy]

Today the slushpile yields the continuation of an sf/fantasy backlist series we've previously received the 1st of free. We're also starting to quite a larger amount of repeats, which probably means that the novelty value of going KDP Select exclusive-or-else is starting to wear off, or the authors have started running out of works to exclusivize and/or are using up their remaining free days on the ones they have before the 90 day mark.

The White Dragon by Laura Resnick, daughter of noted SF writer Mike Resnick and a reasonably good author in her own right, from what little I've read of her work, is the 2nd book in her epic high fantasy Silerian Trilogy, originally published by Tor in 2003.

We received book 1, In Legend Born, as a freebie sometime in December or early January, IIRC. Apparently this should be a treat to view on a tablet, since it's got new colour maps and extras.

The author has helpfully added a note to the blurb saying that this will be free through the US President's Day holiday until midnight @ Amazon main UK DE ES FR IT Additional charges may apply in certain regions.

Description
For a thousand years, fire and water have fought for ascendancy in Sileria, the mountainous island nation wherein dwells Dar, the destroyer goddess. The Guardians, Sileria's mysterious ghost-talking fire sorcerers have been enemies for centuries with the powerful waterlords of the Honored Society. Now, as the conquering Valdani empire spirals into defeat in Sileria, ancient rivalries are rekindled, and Sileria plunges into the inferno of civil war.

When mystical sea spirits, a volcano goddess, and half-human subterranean sorcerers all demand a stake in Sileria's fate, then Mirabar, the fire-eyed prophetess, and Tansen, the reluctant new leader of the mountain rebels, are torn between love and duty. Now everyone in Sileria, allies and enemies alike, must choose between history and destiny—and must fight for victory or face annihilation.

** The second book of the critically acclaimed epic fantasy trilogy which began with IN LEGEND BORN and concludes with THE DESTROYER GODDESS

** This ebook edition contains Color Maps, as well as Directories of Characters, Settings, and a Glossary

The rest of what I recognized/bothered to look at which checked out; not sorted:

St. Martin's/Minotaur-published Gerrie Ferris Finger returns with a cop vs killer thriller: Merciless

Bram Stoker nominee Jeremy Shipp offers a mini-collection of horror tales about: Attic Clowns: Volume One

Elisabeth Waters and Michael Spence offer another mini-collection of their fantasy shorts from the Sword & Sorceress anthologies, for which we've gotten the 2nd one free: Treasures of Albion I

Arizona Wildlife Federation columnist Richard Mason returns with another volume in his historical fiction series about growing up in the South in the 40s if you've been collecting them: The Danged Swamp!

Signet-published Barbara Bartholomew offers another in her YA fantasy series: Princess Alice (Chronicles of Endymion)

Previously-title-featured ISFDBed Lee Killough repeats her ghost cop solving his own murder mystery paranormal procedural if you missed it earlier: Killer Karma

Her re-publisher Books We Love/BWLPP is also offering a few other freebies if you're willing to dig: Linkage to start digging

Previously-featured ISFDBed horror writer Aaron Polson offers two collections of shorts: Linkage for them both

Lynn Hanna offers some kind of Scottish fantasy/paranormal romance 1998-Onyx paperbacked: The Starry Child (The Starry Child Series)

John R. Maxim offers a 1998-Avon conspiracy-looking thriller: Haven

Previously-title-featured Canadian writer Mobashar Qureshi repeats his 2009 Mercury Press mystery: The October Five

Previously-included probably-Harlequined Carol Grace offers a probably-contemporary romance: The Millionaire's Nanny

Forge/Macmillan-published Lewis Perdue apparently really does seem to be an NY Times bestselling author like he claims. He offers a conspiracy-looking thriller: Die By Wire

Scottish writer Douglas Lindsay offers the 1st in a darkly comedic crime series 1999-published by Piatkus and apparently once translated into German: The Long Midnight Of Barney Thomson (Barney Thomson #1)

UK writer John Matthews returns yet again with what may or may not be a new repackage of his 2007 Penguin legal thriller: Ascension Day

Stoker/Edgar award-nominee Billie Sue Mosiman repeats her stalker/suspense thriller: Unidentified

Linden Bay Romance appears to be a small press with a bunch of different authors in their paperback listings. Kelly Wallace offers the 2007-printed self-explanatory: Cowboys Make Better Lovers (Western Romance - Romantic Comedy)

Assuming this is the same Hugh Fox as has this ISFDB entry, Post Mortem Press offers his peyote-fueled possibly-horrific mysterious murder detective investigation: The Lord Said Unto Satan

I like how formerly-included egregious Amazon discussion board spammer Vincent Zandri gives a 5-star review to the other novel by Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine Reader's Choice Award winner Dave Zeltserman packaged into this 2-in-1 release, which coincidentally manages to give an apparent high rating boost overall to Zandri's own novel bundled with it (he couldn't have put that glowing praise on the single edition of Zeltserman's book if he really meant it that much?): Dying Memories/Godchild (2 in 1 Edition) Incidentally, I think Zeltserman's book has been here previously in its solo version. I'm only bothering to include this bundle in case someone missed it earlier and really wants to read more of Zeltserman's work.

Previously-included Washington local small press Coffeetown has a few interesting looking historical/litfic/mystery novels: Linkage for all three

Minor ISFDBed illustrator Chris Howard returns with another in his fantasy series: Saltwater Witch Graphic Novel Chapter 4

Previously-included probably-self-pub Canadian Donna Carrick offers a murder mystery set amongst aid workers after a devastating tsunami: Gold And Fishes

Previously-included EDGE columnist and theatre critic and author of a Ballantine-published same-sex wedding planning guide David Toussaint repeats his collection of columns: Toussaint!

Northwestern State University PhD Chris McMullen returns with another work he encourages you to use for educational purposes: Understand Basic Chemistry Concepts (in Color)

And once you've learned all that, perhaps this may provide a useful example of what you may or may not want to put your newly learned knowledge to: The Dark Lord's Handbook

Have fun, especially if you decide to take pointers from that last book, although the Evil Overlord List might actually provide better and more useful advice.

Thanks for the hard work, yet again! Still sorting out what I want to grab, but I'm exited to see the John R. Maxim offering. I've loved his 'Bannerman' series.

I'm a huge fan of your postings, but embarrassed to admit I've never posted before.
So, thank you for the fantastic research & information, and also for the thoughtful discussion/explanation of e-book/DRM/Amazon issues.

Also wanted to point out that the Coffeetown books you mentioned include Hazel Holt's "My Dear Charlotte." Holt is a successful trad-pubbed author of the 'Mrs Malory' mystery series...also close friend of Barbara Pym and her literary executor/biographer. Plus she's the mother of Tom Holt, British fantasy author.
Thank you for pointing this one out too!

509!

And now that Kovid has released a fix for the Amazon metadata issue, I've got some work to do on about three weeks' worth of freebies...

Thanks for the info, and welcome to MobileRead!

Some updates with previously-included authors/publishers:

I forget who published Lise McClendon, but she's been published and featured here before. She offers a Seattle-based reporter teaming up with police detective mystery (together, they fight crime!) written under her pen name Rory Tate: Jump Cut Her previously available to all on Smashwords freebie has gone back up in price there, but is lingering at free at Amazon for who knows how long: Painted Truth (Alix Thorssen Mysteries)

Mary Anna Evans is published by Poisoned Pen Press, and I've read and recommend her 1st-in-series PPP-published Faye Longchamp mystery, which you can get for just 99 cents DRM-free and in an ePub/Mobi bundle direct from the publisher as part of their introductory sale pricing for your choice of 1st of 23 different mystery series (some of which I've read and would say were quite good), as mentioned in this thread. They've really gone out of their way to fix issues for people having problems shopping at their webstore, and I'd say it's worth it to get the books directly from them even though you don't get a "cloud" copy and will have to keep your own backups. Anyway, Evans offers an environmental stalker/suspense thriller which is not KDP and playing pricing catchup with Smashwords, although I hope that its non-appearance at the other usual SW-distributing outlets does not mean that it has just been freshly yanked to be exclusivized: Wounded Earth

Ellora's Cave-published Jade Buchanan offers another in the multi-author western romance setting, this one a tie-in to another previously-offered story: Penny Candy (Bandit Creek) (ETA: The story it ties into is still free: Hard Candy)

Decadent Publishing LLC has another probably-erotic romance freebie, this one an f/m paranormal by Vivi Dumas: Soul Catcher

Previously-included Latin American politics/culture writer Michael Hogan has an educational freebie short for helping students and English-language learners with their writing skills: Intelligent Mistakes

I've previously included some titles from newbie small mystery/genre imprint Camel Press. They've a couple of titles free, including one called Things to Do in Denver When You're Un-Dead (FROM THE FILES OF THE BSI) which has been listed among a handful of other Camel titles in the ISFDB for presumably being sufficiently speculative. Anyway: Linkage to pull up what they're offering.
