Embed other video file types

Is it possible to upgrade the forum software so that other video file types besides YouTube can be embedded?

Vimeo.com is one site that has embeddable videos.

As MadamB stated Vimeo is a big one, I also see more Flash based videos on sites and of course there is QuickTime.

I think it would be good to be able to embed Yahoo Video. Sometimes at Youtube the embedding is disabled on some videos. A second alternate source, such as Yahoo Video, then sometimes has the same video with an embedding code. Currently, however, Yahoo Video clips can't be posted here at the forum.

Anyone else think it would be good to have the added option to be able to post Yahoo Video? (and also keep the ability to post Youtube of course)

Thanks for mentioning this one. I hadn't seen Vimeo before. It looks quite good; quite a different feel to it than Youtube.
I'd be quite pleased if it ever became possible to embed video from Vimeo here at MR.

Youtube is nice because generally the nudity and super offensive content is reported and deleted from the site. Do these other sites restrict nudity and porn? I really dont want to unsuspectently open up something I wish I hadn't while I am with my kids or at work.

You make a good point about Youtube. They do have strict guidelines relating to objectionable and offensive material. These guidelines are usually well followed and anything contravening them is generally intercepted and taken down relatively quickly.

Don't Cross the Line

Here are some common-sense rules that will help you steer clear of trouble:

* YouTube is not for pornography or sexually explicit content. If this describes your video, even if it's a video of yourself, don't post it on YouTube. Also, be advised that we work closely with law enforcement and we report child exploitation. Please read our Safety Tips and stay safe on YouTube.
* Don't post videos showing bad stuff like animal abuse, drug or substance abuse, or bomb making.
* Graphic or gratuitous violence is not allowed. If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated, don't post it.
* YouTube is not a shock site. Don't post gross-out videos of accidents, dead bodies and similar things.
* Respect copyright. Only upload videos that you made or that you are permitted to use. This means don't upload videos you didn't make, or use content in your videos that someone else owns the copyright to, such as music tracks, snippets of copyrighted programs, or videos made by other users, without necessary permissions. * We encourage free speech and defend everyone's right to express unpopular points of view. But we don't permit hate speech (speech which attacks or demeans a group based on race or ethnic origin, religion, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation/gender identity, or their status as a returned soldier).

Things NOT To Do

* Don't spam- This includes videos and comments. Sure, online video is all about self-promotion, but if you post content solely to advertise another website, it will be removed and your account may be suspended.
* Don’t upload the "usual suspects"- Videos depicting nudity, pornography, sex, graphic violence, dead bodies, serious bodily injury or death, threats, or animal abuse are not allowed.
* Don't violate copyright- Be smart about what you upload. Unless you made the video yourself, or you have the rights from the person who did, it’s not a good idea to upload it. Your account may be suspended for uploading infringing content.
* Don't hate- We’re serious. The Yahoo! Video community is made up of people of different races, religions, age groups, sexual preferences, and backgrounds. We ask you to respect diversity and differences in your comments and videos.

Upload ONLY videos you create and have the necessary permissions to upload.

* You may not upload videos containing ads before or after the video, unless given prior written permission from an authorized member of the Vimeo staff. Videos with any advertisements in them, including links to commercial sites, regardless of content, will be removed.
* You may not upload videos pertaining to Multi Level Marketing (MLM), get rich quick, cash gifting, work from home business, or any other dubious money making ventures.
* You may not upload product promotions or sales videos, such as real estate walkthroughs.
* Television stations may not redistribute their programming.
* We reserve the right to allow certain commercial content for those businesses who have coordinated sponsored advertising campaigns or direct partnerships with Vimeo.

Content restrictions
No gameplay videos, "fan vids", sexually explicit videos, or music videos, movies, TV, and trailers that you found on the web.
* No sexually explicit material or porn. Non-sexual nudity is okay.
* No videos that incite hatred, include hate speech, defamatory or discriminatory speech or videos depicting unlawful acts or extreme violence.
* You may post videos of yourself on TV, as long as you have the permission to upload and the video is limited to your involvement in the program only.
* No videos that are just compilations of scenes from TV or movies.
* No captures of video games or gameplay, regardless if it is edited or not. Machinima with a story is allowed, provided the story is more than "guys doing exactly what the game was made for (eg skateboarding or shooting people)". Machinima videos must be properly labeled as such in the video description to avoid accidental deletion.
* Video game developers may post videos of their work provided they cite their involvement in the description of the video (maps and mods to commercial games don't count). Here we are talking about development videos, not commercial trailers.

From the above mentioned guidelines, it would seem Yahoo is suitable.

Unfortunately, it seems that Vimeo allow non-sexual nudity (mentioned in "content restrictions") which would not at all be appropriate. According to this, it would most likely not be in MobileRead's interest to allow Vimeo, and I think it would probably be out of consideration.

I was thinking in terms of MR members posting videos of new devices. As far as I know, there is nothing preventing inappropriate still images from being posted... except the MR membership (I've seen and reported a personal album full of porn that was viewable by the general membership). If someone posted an inappropriate video we'd just have to report it. The mods are very quick in getting stuff removed.
